March 2013 CIPS Volunteer of the Month:
Thomas Boxall, I.S.P., ITCP

March CIPS Volunteer of the Month:
Thomas Boxall, I.S.P., ITCP
Developer, ISM Canada
Director, CIPS Saskatchewan
What type of Involvement have you had with CIPS?
"I first heard about CIPS while in University, but didn't become involved until I joined ISM Canada. CIPS' desire to promote professionalism in the IT industry resonated with my desire to be an IT Professional. I started off as the Student Coordinator for CIPS Regina and participated on the CIPS Regina Board until their amalgamation with CIPS Saskatoon to create CIPS Saskatchewan. I continued to volunteer for CIPS Saskatchewan as a Student Coordinator in Regina. 2 years ago I was voted onto the CIPS Saskatchewan Board of Directors and took up the position as the Southern Saskatchewan Program Director. Last year the Northern Saskatchewan and Southern Saskatchewan Program Chairs were merged and I became the CIPS Saskatchewan Program Director. I owe a lot of my success to the hard work of our Executive Director Maria Galati, our partnership agreements with groups like PMI, IIBA, and the Regina Tech Community, and my desire to bring the best content to our members."

Thinking about getting your MBA and your CIPS ITCP designation?

CIPS recently approved an entry route to the Information Technology Certified Professional (ITCP) designation for those ICT practitioners who have successfully completed the Australian Computer Society online Computer Professional Education Program (CPE Program).
CPEP is a postgraduate level ICT program with a strong focus on ICT and business alignment. The CPE Program consists of three core subjects, one elective and a Professional Practice component, allowing you to further develop your understanding in an area of interest to you. The course is offered online with a dedicated online learning platform that provides you with the flexibility to study at a time and place that suits you. You'll work closely with fellow students in a highly interactive virtual classroom, sharing experiences and knowledge all under the guidance of your subject tutor and, unique to the CPE Program, your own personal mentor.
Your studies will earn you credits towards leading graduate diploma and masters programs in Australia and you will qualify to apply for the ITCP designation. Holding the ITCP qualifies you for the Athabasca University's Master of Science in Information Systems Program and the Executive MBA program, and the University of Fredericton on-line Executive Master for Business Administration Degree (EMBA).

Government of Canada has pre-budget consultations with CIPS' Youth

On February 14th CIPS' youth were invited to take part in pre-budget consultations being held by the Government of Canada's Ministry of Human Resources and Skills Development. The meeting took the form of an informal conference call and was led by Dr. Kellie Leitch, O. Ont, MD, MBA, FRCS(C), who is the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development Canada. CIPS' youth comprised of current students and recent graduates under the age of 30.
Dr. Leitch was looking for input from the CIPS' youth on what the Government is currently doing right, and what they can improve upon with respect to skills development programs. Dr. Leitch asked participants what critical items affected them from entering the workforce, and what barriers and challenges they encountered. Responses from CIPS' youth included making it easier for students from lower income families to get student loans, providing cheaper learning material options like e-books, and the need for more paying IT internships.

Step-By-Step: Resources to Help You Learn (via Microsoft TechNet)

via Microsoft TechNet
As of late Pierre, Mitch and I have been traveling this great country we call home to bring the goodness of Microsoft's ecosystem to you hometown. #CANITPRO Camps, formerly known as IT Camps, have been a great opportunity to share our knowledge of offerings such as Windows Server 2012, Hyper-V Server 2012, System Center 2012 and Windows 8 for Enterprise with the IT Professional community. In turn, attendees have been sharing their knowledge and experience back with us and we have been happy to participate amidst that conversation in person and online.
At present we, the Developer Platform and Tools team (DPE) here at Microsoft Canada, are currently working on version 2 of the Windows Server 2012 camp and a new Windows 8 Enterprise Management via System Center 2012 Configuration Manager camp. The camps are currently being built on recommendation provided by attendees of the first round of camps and final testing will be completed soon. During this brief pause of the #CANITPRO Camp tour we at DPE wanted to make available labs conducted during the camp as well as labs we were not able to get to so that learning could continue on your own time. Hence the Step-By-Step series was born.
