New ICCP President:
Ken Metcalfe, CCP, I.S.P., ITCP

On ICCP's 40th Anniversary, it is fitting to note that CIPS too celebrates 40 years in association with ICCP, a professional achievement in today's era of fleeting partnerships.  Beyond time, ICCP and CIPS have deep roots through skills assessment, paths to certification and strong ties with CIPS members. These relationships truly run deep as evidenced not only by my presidency but also Léon Wagschal, M.Sc., CSP, CDP, I.S.P., ITCP/IP3P as President ICCP Education Foundation, Ken Bainey, CCP, and Kewal Dhariwal, I.S.P., CCP, ITCP/IP3-IFIP as ICCP Executive Director.  Léon currently serves on the CIPS National board and Kewal is a past president of CIPS National.

Registrar & Marketing Director, CIPS Ontario

 Membership Director, CIPS Executive Council

What type of Involvement have you had with CIPS?

As a CIPS member since 1984, I have had the honour and the privilege of working with and learning from some of the most brilliant and amazing leaders across Canada.  While inspired very early in my career to get involved with volunteerism, I continue to help support CIPS at all levels.

Since joining CIPS, my roles have included being President of CIPS London ('87-88); Regional Director South Western Ontario ('89-94); as well as serving on various committees locally and nationally.

I currently serve as Provincial Registrar/Secretary and Marketing Director on the CIPS Ontario Board of Directors as well as Director of Membership on the Executive Council.

At a local level, I enjoy helping to plan events and act as a liaison with our partners in the interest of helping to strengthen the value of membership while providing professional opportunities.

CIPS Chair Blog: "Dawson College Student Expulsion
and the Need for an IT Code of Ethics"

Feb 4 2013 - Many of us were shocked to hear that Dawson College in Montreal expelled a student because he reported a security vulnerability in the school's computer systems.  As more details have come out the story tells of a conscientious student helping the college ensure security of the student data, but further details exposed a  student far too eager to pursue exposure of the security flaw even after requests to stop.  Unfortunately the student's eagerness ended up creating potential negative consequences for his professional future.  Hopefully the Omnivox Software provider Skytech better understands quality programming can make or break the reputation of a company. Standards and quality control in software development is necessary to ensure protection of the public.  For all IT professionals on either side of purchasing or creating software applications, adhering to a code of conduct and a code of practice  should be accepted and understood.  Whether you belong to an IT professional organization or not every IT practitioner needs to understand that a high level of moral and ethical intelligence is required for a career in the IT industry.  It's all about trust between the employer and the employee or contractor.  Without trust the relationship breaks down and it will come to an end.  Unfortunately we hope the best for the student and hope he is able to learn from the experience as should the college with possible better education and communication to students about an IT code of ethics.  For information on the CIPS code of ethics see link http://www.cips.ca/ethics

Sincerely,

Brenda Byers, I.S.P., ITCP/IP3P

Chair, CIPS National Board
