What value has your involvement with CIPS provided?

I've recieved my I.S.P. and ITCP though CIPS, and I wouldn't have an MBA if it weren't for CIPS.  However, it's through volunteering that I've received the most value.

There's certainly value if you meet someone at an event, but a casual meeting isn't a substitute for the trust that can be built when you work alongside other people in a volunteer capacity.  Through volunteer work, you not only get to know people, but you get to build a level of trust with them that can truly enrich your life.

Take your ICT Career to the Next Level: CIPS offering access to a world-class online education program

CIPS, in partnership with our sister organization the Australian Computer Society (ACS), is providing a great opportunity for a selected group of CIPS members to gain access to a world-class online education program. The ACS Computer Professional Education Program (CPEP) is an online postgraduate level ICT program. The curriculum is structured around the Skills Framework for the Information Age, the world's most popular ICT skills framework used by thousands of organizations and adopted as the skills framework by the Australian, New Zealand, and United Kingdom governments.

This IP3 (www.ipthree.org) accredited program is a pathway to becoming an internationally recognized IT professional. Working with peers from across the globe, you will gain experience in developing risk management plans for projects, study compliance and regulatory requirements governing IT, gain knowledge of various technical specialisations and their application in the operational environment. Through this program you will also develop the ability to provide advice on project scoping and options for operational improvement. The program prepares you to effectively work at a SFIA Level 5 autonomy, responsibility and influence (see job categories mapped to SFIA).

Call for Interest - CIPS Education Equivalency Assessors

CIPS recently submitted a proposal to Citizenship and Immigration Canada's (CIC) Foreign Credential Recognition Office (FCRO) to attain the rights to a service agreement under the Federal Skilled Worker Class (FSWC) whereby persons seeking to apply for immigration into Canada would be required to submit an assessment of their foreign educational credentials' authenticity and equivalency to a Canadian educational credential.  Although CIPS has not yet been identified as a preferred provider of these educational credential assessments, it is preparing to be ready by December 31st should our bid be successful.

CIPS already assesses foreign credentials as part of its Certification Program and engages volunteers for this activity. The anticipated volumes of applicants under the FSWC program could be significantly high and it will be critical to perform these assessments relatively quickly.  CIPS is therefore looking for a number of assessors for the foreign credential assessment group.

The general purpose of the Academic Assessor is to:

  • Review and assess academic details based on educational transcripts;
  • Prepare detailed findings on the assessment;
  • Report the findings to the Registrar's Office.

2012 Gaylen Duncan Scholarship Winner: Devin Denis

My name is Devin Denis.  I'm entering my fourth year of Computer Science at Carleton University.  Last summer I worked at MC Countermeasures Inc. as part of Carleton's Co-op program, which was a great experience.  Within computer science, I'm particularly interested in design patterns, human computer interaction, and localization.  I hope to work in a field related to one of these topics after I graduate.  Winning the Gaylen Duncan award validates the work I put into my studies, and the monetary aid is extremely helpful.  With the aid of co-op and scholarships such as the Gaylen Duncan award, I expect to graduate debt-free.  Thank you so much.

About the Gaylen Duncan Scholarship

Established 1992, each year the CIPS Ottawa Section provides student scholarships to outstanding students in a full-time Computer Science/Software Engineering Program. The candidates must be enrolled in programs that are accredited by CIPS National. Those programs are found at both the University of Ottawa and at Carleton University. Each student receives a scholarship in the amount of $1500 from CIPS Ottawa.

Windows 8: The least spooky thing to come out this October!

via Microsoft TechNet

Think the release of Windows 8 means there's toil and trouble brewing for desktop deployment specialists and IT project managers? Not so! It's really not that spooky and here are 3 reasons why:

1. There's lots to like about Windows 8 for organizations. From AppLocker to BitLocker, from Client Hyper-V to Group Policy Management, there are many new and improved features for IT professionals to get excited about. Learn more >>

2. The tools and methods used to pilot and deploy Windows 7 are the same tools used for Windows 8. Whether it's MDT, WDS, MAP, ACT, SCCM  or USMT  - the tools used to plan a move from Windows XP can be used to deploy either Windows 7 or Windows 8.Learn more>>

3. We've got you covered. We're working hard to make sure you have the information you need to explore, plan and deploy Windows 8 into your organization. Check out the Springboard site as well as these posts from the Canadian IT Pro Connection blog for information about getting started with Windows 8:
