The Masterson Method®
Monthly Newsletter - July  2014

Hello All,

I returned at the end of June from the UK where we had a great time doing advanced and foundational weekend courses. I took some great pictures of the beautiful yards (barns), locations, and happy students.  You can see them all on the Masterson Method Facebook page.  Be sure to click on the UK Courses, June 2014.

We started the three weeks in England with a Practitioner's Day, a demonstration and a Weekend Seminar at Dovecote Stables in Churchill, Oxfordshire. We ended in Salisbury at Withyslade Farm, a thoroughbred breeding farm and lodge touted by some (Jim) to be maybe the happiest place on earth. And if not that, at the very least, a very fun place to spend a couple of weeks with like-minded horses and horse people. During this period we taught a total of over 50 students during two Weekend Seminars, three 5-Day Advanced Courses, and a 3-day Final Certification Course.

Also in the news we have a new Advanced 5-Day instructor for Europe; Diane Howard.  Diane lives in Troiry, France. She and Vicky Devlin have helped me teach this course for many years in England and Ireland, and it's time for Diane to bring it to other parts of Europe. Her first course will be in Austria, at the Reitstall Deninger in Goellerdorf.  She'll be teaching the foundational Weekend Seminar Workshop August 23 and 24 ,with the Advanced 5-Day course following from August 25-29.

Check out the Performance Horse Digest magazine which is now carrying our monthly column along with columns by the likes of Craig Cameron, Lynn Palm, Ken McNabb, the Parellis, Martha Josey and others. You can access the magazine for free online, and take in helpful training articles the above - and me - if your eyes aren't too tired by then. Take a look.

August 18th will be the beginning of even more fun for two weeks at the World Equestrian Games in Normandy, France. I have a new camera and will be able to keep you all up to date on the day to day happenings leading up to the WEG Endurance event on the 28th.  You will be able to follow this on the Masterson Method Facebook page.

US Endurance Team rider Meg Sleeper will be sharing her experiences giving us a "behind the scenes" look at the training up to and during the WEG. I will be following her (and her horse's) progress during the then days that I'll be with the team. The picture above was taken during the 2009 pre-ride leading up to the 2010 WEG in Lexington, KY.  In the photo, wet-and-freezing crew members rush to take care of wet-and-freezing horses and riders during one of their holds after a vet check. The holds, usually lasting around 45 minutes, take place after scheduled veterinarian inspections, and give the horse time to rest, eat, get feet checked, get bodywork, and if needed, dry out, cool down or warm up as needed, before completing another loop. While endurance racing is a timed event, there is an important technical aspect in that the horse must continue to be sound and healthy during the entire event. If the horse doesn't stay within very strict parameters the horse is pulled from the competition. Hence the vet checks and holds. During the time I've spent with them, I have to say how impressed I've been by the knowledge, experience, horse sense, and caring that the US Endurance Team has had for their horses. 'Nuff said.

Here's a happier photo with riders Meg

Sleeper and Val Kanavy on one of the warmer days leading up to the actual WEG Endurance event at Lexington in 2010 (that would be me on the left).

Instructor Coralie Hughes has just finished teaching our first 3-Day Dressage Movements Revealed Course  and gives us an update below on what went on during the three days. The course involved horses, finger paints, biomechanics discussions, and specific techniques for specific issues - and was more (you got it) fun. Read the full account from Coralie below.

And last but certainly not least, we have 4 new Certified Practitioners from the UK. Read about them here, and Congratulations and Well Done to Bern Easterford, Niamh Fitzpatrick, Nikki Kagan and Sophie England! Read their bios below along with the good news of all the translations of the Beyond Massage book and DVD.

I think this has been enough fun for one month. Talk to you next month. Until then, of course - Enjoy your Horses!

Jim

First 'Dressage Movements Revealed'
3-Day Course Completed

The new Masterson Method bodywork course based on the Dressage Movements Revealed project was held July 11-13th at Coralie's farm (course instructor) in Coatesville, Indiana, ably assisted by MMCP, Cheryl Fell.  Twelve students attended, 8 of whom had previously attended a weekend seminar, 2 having also attended the advanced class. Four of the students had no previous exposure to the method. Seven of the students were USDF (United States Dressage Federation) members and were happy to receive USDF University credits for attending.

The DMR course expands beyond the traditional weekend course both in terms of content and techniques taught.  The goal of the three day program is to connect biomechanics of dressage (which actually applies to biomechanics of most disciplines to at least some extent) to bodywork on the dressage horse, who typically presents with discipline specific areas of restriction and tightness.

Dressage Movements Revealed 3-Day Course: April 10 - 12, 2015

Ask Jim
Jim at Stanford -equlife
Dear Jim,

Good evening, I was wondering why my horse has suddenly changed his release reactions.  Weeks ago he used to lick his lips, shake it out, etc, just like he had read your book.  I returned from several weeks absence, and now he does that only minimally, and instead fidgets and constantly tries to walk out of his stall, but without a subsequently release, as he is "supposed" to do. I am confident that I have not changed anything that I am doing, and usually don't even go beyond egg yoke, usually staying with air gap pressure.

He sometimes won't even let my hand get close to his poll on his bad side, and he used to relish the Bladder Meridian. Shall I just be patient and try to find less painful places to work on? Or what would you suggest?  BTW, if I close the stall door, he becomes claustrophobic and becomes so nervous that he can think of nothing else but escape. I have returned to putting a halter on him, and running the lead rope through the rails, which didn't use to be necessary. Any suggestions?

Sincerely, Rebecca

Testimonials for Marie Riley and Lorre Mueller, both Instructors in the Masterson Method.

Dear Marie, (Marie Riley, MM Instructor)

Thank you for an incredible weekend!  I'd been looking forward to the clinic since I first learned about it and to say that it far surpassed my expectations would be a major understatement.   I can't believe how much we learned in such a short time - absolutely awesome!

Dear Lorre, (Lorrre Mueller, MM Instructor)

Thank you again Lorre, I really enjoyed the whole weekend. I was finally able to get my hands on two of my horses this past Sunday. My old guy I think got the most out of it. His posture is better and I realized how tight his rear end is. Here i thought it was all in his poll, turns out its everywhere. Probably goes back to what you said about the front and back being connected.

Sophie England - UK

After a number of years away from ponies I found myself hankering to get back in the saddle, a complete contrast to my 9-5 office job. I was fortunate to be able to buy a horse but not so fortunate for him to develop a lameness and arthritis after a relatively short period.
