Masterson Method newsletter
The Masterson Method®
Monthly Newsletter - January  2014

Hi Everyone,

A Happy New Year to all.  2013 was a year of growth and fulfillment and this year we are expecting to reach even more horses and owners around the globe.

Looking back

Since 2007 we have taught hundreds of
Weekend and Advanced Courses, teaching more than 2500 people techniques that have helped them to improve performance and enhance their relationships with their horses. Owners, riders, and therapists who help others with their horses all have been exposed to the Masterson Method increasing our reach. Through Facebook, our You Tube Channel, Linked In  and other web-based social outlets, we are now connecting with thousands of people who have bought the book and DVD's, or have watched the free videos and are using Masterson Method techniques on their horses.

More importantly, we have a base of horse-people letting us help them give back to their horses.  We have 95 Certified Practitioners in North America, Europe and Australia, and a dedicated team of instructors helping us to spread the word and create even more.  It's extremely gratifying to get streams of emails from inspired and happy horse-people, speaking for their content and comfortable horses - our ultimate goal.

Lastly, in the office, we have gone from Conley, Nancy Fenton and me, to three full-time staff, plus Conley and me.  In terms of products, we now have three instructional DVD's and a book published, and one more book (based on the video, Dressage Movements Revealed) on the way (see below).  With our newest course designed for those that can't get to a weekend seminar-workshop, we now have an online home-study course

Looking forward

Absorbine

Through our association with Absorbine our name and image will be in front of a whole new group of horse lovers and riders.  Absorbine is coming out with a new line of botanical products and we are happy to be a part of this.

Beyond Horse Massage Translations

With the help of our publisher, Trafalgar Square - Horse and Rider Books, Beyond Horse Massage is being translated into German. It is on the way to being translated into Polish and French.

Trafalgar is actively searching for a suitable publisher in South America to have the book translated into Spanish. If any of you have any contacts in the field of horse publishing in that part of the world, feel free to contact us or our publisher.

Seminars and Courses

As our seminar program continues to grow so will our team of instructors, and I'm fortunate to have many dedicated Certified Practitioners eager to help with this. Our seminar goal is to have multiple seminars being taught every weekend, around the country and the world.  My personal goal is ultimately to have every horse who has an owner experiencing at least the bladder meridian.

If you are one of those people who has seen a video clip or bought the book, but something is holding you back, go out to the barn now and put your hands on your horse.  As Yogi Berra might have said, If you're not out there doing the bladder meridian on your horse, stop it!

Go out and do the Bladder Meridian technique...and then add a little Lateral Flexion...and maybe a little bit of Head-Up. You'll be surprised. It can only help your horse, and another level of communication may open up that you didn't know was there.

The Calendar for Weekend Seminars in 2014 is filling up. As I look at the Calendar page I see also that the Advanced 5-day classes are showing up at a rate of about twice a month (I'm glad I checked since I'm supposed to be at some of these!)  I encourage all those who have done a Weekend Seminar to continue on to a 5 Day Advanced Course.   Planning to become certified isn't a prerequisite to attending the 5 Day Advanced Course.  I invite all who have taken the Weekend Seminar to bump their bodywork and communication skills up to a new level.

Here is a recent testimonial for the 5 Day Advanced Course; "Fantastic - Overwhelming! Extremely beneficial, and an eye-opener."  Sounds kind of like a movie review in the Rolling Stone...

Price Increase of Weekend Seminars

Our fees for the foundational workshops are going up for 2014.  It's always uncomfortable for me to raise fees as it's never been about the money for me, so we haven't raised prices in quite a while.  The good news is that the office has determined that we are still comparable, and in some cases lower than other courses being offered.  We are offering the old price to anyone who signs up for a weekend workshop by February 14th.  We have listed the new prices and old prices on the calendar page, so click on the seminar of your choice and sign up before the price goes up on the 15th.

To augment this, and allow more people to come and learn the techniques, we will be offering auditing at our weekend workshops!  You are welcome to come and audit one or two days.

Audit a Weekend Seminar

In 2014 we will be offering the option of auditing selected Weekend Seminars. We will be adding this option to the calendar listings and shopping cart soon.  One I am especially excited to have auditors join us is the Hastings Hill, Churchill, UK seminar.  We have lots of room for auditors there, and are planning a great seminar.  We will keep you posted as to all the details in the coming weeks.

Dressage Movements Revealed Book and New 3-day Seminar

Coralie Hughes and I are working on (in our spare time) a new companion book to the Dressage Movements Revealed DVD. We plan to have this out through Horse and Rider Books (Trafalgar Square Publishing) in Fall 2014.

We are also organizing a 3-day, Masterson Method Dressage Course to be taught by Coralie Hughes, who you all know from the Dressage Movements Revealed DVD. This will be combined with the Weekend Seminar, and will involve bio-mechanics and sport-specific techniques for the dressage horse. It will be structured for both new-comers to Weekend Seminars, and dressage enthusiasts who have already taken a Weekend Seminar.

New Certified Practitioners

I am happy to welcome some newly certified practitioners, Phil Langdale from Canada, Linda Fisher from Arizona, Cheryl Fell from Indiana and Maureen Benjamin from Nevada.  Below you can read about two newly certified practitioners from the UK, Tamsin Bendle and Carol Bracewell.  Congratulations!

Thinking Big

And in the "thinking big" department we would like to eventually have an educational/reality TV program on cable or network TV.  What takes place between the horse and human with this method is interactive, fulfilling and very visual. I figure that if we want to share this with as many people and horses as possible we should put it out there and see what happens.  Manifestation starts with an idea put forth! Stay tuned...

Until then, like me,

Enjoy your horses.
Jim

The Masterson Minute, Trouble Relaxing the Hind Leg Down and Forward Technique

Excerpt from, Dressage Movements Revealed,
new book by Jim Masterson and Coralie Hughes due out Fall, 2014

The skeleton provides the framework, but the muscles produce movement by flexing and straightening a joint between two bones or parts of the skeleton (for example, the hock, between the tibia and the cannon bone). Simplistically speaking, the muscles work primarily in pairs to operate the hinge joints of the skeleton with one muscle running over the joint and the other muscle running under the joint.

Advanced Student

"UNBRIDLED DAYS" 2014 horse calendar was created by professional photographer, Haruko who is also a Masterson Method student. Proceeds go to the non-profit organization Lord Stirling School Horse Retirement Fund.

Calendar features school horses doing what they do be best in their free time: playing, rolling and looking beautiful. The school horses were rescued at auctions or donated to the program. Your support helps find "forever homes" for the wonderful school horses when they can no longer work in the lesson program.

New Masterson Method Certified Practitioner
Tamsin Bendle, UK

I live in the West of Cornwall, near Redruth and have 3 rescue ponies and a cat - also rescued. My connection with horses started at a young age as a child when I would sit on the local farm horse and be led around the fields.  This experience led to riding and competing at local shows as a teenager on my own pony and then horse.

I have owned horses for 30 years and trained youngsters to advanced dressage, one which I bred and currently compete.

This sport requires patience and a feel, for the horse to work with you, and to recognize signs of tension, e.g., tail swishing, stiffness, uneven gait, and misbehaving.

Masterson Method Testimonials
Hi Jim,
Just wanted to tell you how glad I am that I found your method. I have an OTTB gelding with multiple areas of tenderness and pain. Along with veterinary administered laser treatments, I've been able to get him to release with barely touching or moving him.

Once he realized the routine, he was all for it and started to show me what he wanted me to do (i.e. turned his head and pushed me to hold it up to take pressure off his poll = lots of yawning and chewing.)

Even today after some minor hind-end work, I was laughing when he released while trying to get him to yield his hindquarters. He wouldn't stop yielding his hindquarters as he kept yawning and chewing himself in circles multiple times. The same happened when I was having him backup. Head down and lots of licking and yawning while going in reverse. What a relief to know with your technique, I'm able to help him release some tension and hopefully help him become a calmer less reactive horse. THANK YOU!!!!

Hi Jim,

I felt I really had to write to you to thank you personally for your work and for sharing your expertise with us laymen!

I had bought your book a few weeks ago and have been working on my 4 year old PRE stallion. I got him after he had been on 4 months box rest for a muscle injury and I used your techniques regularly to try and release his lumbar and hind-end area most of all.

The releases I get sometimes are amazing - yawning and snorting galore! The horse seems to love it and there is no doubt that it has helped to not only get him back to health but has also helped maintain it. Months of work later, he has developed so much more strength, muscle tone but also suppleness, its so encouraging! I still use the techniques regularly and always love to see my boy release any tension and truly relax in mind and body.

So in a nutshell - THANK YOU!!!

Very best regards,
Claire Azzopardi
