We've put a lot into this project.  The horse anatomy painter Susan Harris,  Masterson Method Instructor Coralie Hughes, the videographers and I traveled to Betsy Steiner's barn in Wellington FL to paint the muscles and skeleton on Bacchus, and shoot the anatomy/biomechanics and riding sections, and my part of the Masterson Method bodywork section.

Two months later, Coralie, Betsy, the videographers and I gathered again here in Fairfield, Iowa to shoot the commentary section. Coralie, Betsy and I review and comment for the viewer, the video of Betsy riding Bacchus through the upper level movements of dressage.

Each movement is ridden both on the skeleton-painted horse, and the muscle-painted horse. You can see in slow motion the movement and use of the muscles and skeleton. The inter-relation of different parts of the body with each movement is clearly demonstrated, with Betsy commenting on the difference between how it feels when the horse is moving freely, and when restriction might be affecting it's movement.

The project turned into a whopping, 175 minute, 2 disk set. In the second DVD disk is where I demonstrate Masterson Method bodywork techniques on Conego, another of Betsy Steiner's horses in training.

You can use these sport-specific techniques

on their own, or in conjunction with the fundamental techniques demonstrated in our book and DVD, Beyond Horse Massage to help you maintain suppleness, even-ness, fluidity, and freedom of movement in the dressage horse. I would suggest owning both, as a good start to your Masterson Method library of reference materials.

Whether you are a dressage enthusiast or not, I think you will find Dressage Movements Revealed both visually stunning and an educational look into equine biomechanics. For dressage fanatics, it will probably be like a box of candy - but with less sugar.

Fairfield, Iowa Courses

We just completed teaching a Weekend Seminar-Workshop, an Advanced 5-Day Course, and Three-Day Certification Completion Course back to back here in Fairfield, Iowa. It was great to come home each evening to my own bed, eat at home, and show off our small town, Fairfield - which was listed by Smithsonian Magazine as one of the top 10 small towns in America.  In Iowa you ask?  Yep, that's right!

Vicky Devlin, an Instructor and our European Coordinator and Field Work Coordinator from the UK, flew over to meet everyone in the office and to help with the courses.

She spent time comparing notes (talking about me) with her counterpart here - North American Field Work Coordinator Yvonne Ohlensehlen. Not sure what might come out of that, but I hope it's good...

We also invited our Certified Practitioners back to join the Certification Completion Course to review and "get up to speed" with new techniques.  We found that they were a great addition to the course, not only a wealth of information for our newly certified, but we had a great time together as a group.  We worked, ate, and played together.

Everyone - including me - split (were forced) into groups of four and tasked with presenting a Masterson Method technique to the whole group as a skit, song, mime or (what my group did) Wheel of Fortune guessing game.

Although we only had lunch on Sunday to plan and practice, it produced a lot of fun and laughter, and we ended the night with a bonfire telling funny and embarrassing stories.

Certified Practitioners, Instructors and newly Certified Practitioners went away wanting to return, and we're planning to do it again next year here in Fairfield.

New Masterson Method Certified Practitioners

Below, you can read more about three of the eight talented (and fun) students that just completed the Certification Completion Course in Fairfield, IA.

Christie Hebert is a competitive barrel racer from Wyoming, Laura Faber-Morris works with Icelandic horses, TEAM, and Centered Riding in Whitefish, Montana, and Daniela LeBlanc, originally from Germany now calls the Chicago, IL area home.

We will be highlighting all of the new practitioners in upcoming newsletters. In the meantime, go to the Find a Certified Practitioner page on our website, click on your region, and find a fun, skillful MMCP near you.

In November I'm off to the UK to teach courses and present at the  Your Horse Live Expo, November 9th - 10th at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire, UK.  Come look for me in the Equine Learning Zone,  or stop by our booth. I will undoubtedly return with more news.

I plan to be home for Thanksgiving and the Holidays - we'll see how that goes...

Until then,

Like me, enjoy your horses

There never was a time in my life when I wasn't crazy about horses. Even though I didn't have one of my very own until I was 18, from the earliest age I would hang around the neighborhood stables until someone would notice me and give me a job, usually cleaning stalls of course, but I loved every bit of taking care of these wonderful animals.

Horses are magical creatures, even from a distance and have fascinated me from the time I was little. In my very small hometown German village, I was drawn to their majesty and beauty even though I had very little opportunity for hands-on experience. I knew, somehow, that I would find a way to have horses in my life.

When I was introduced to Jim years ago, I knew that Jim's work was exactly the missing piece for me as a horse professional. I went to a two-day weekend workshop followed by an Advanced five-day course. I walked away with the realization that in addition to what I was already doing, The Masterson Method® empowered me
with more skills.

Ask Jim
Horse won't stop pulling his leg away during Shoulder Release.

I just got back from the weekend seminar in Texas and am very excited to get started.  Everything has been going great and I'm getting lots of great releases!  Until today...  I was trying for the shoulder release both front and back and the horse wouldn't stop pulling his leg away. He throws it forward as if pawing the ground, both sides.  I've tried to stay with him but he just gets more agitated and paws harder.  He is a 13 year old jumper who is very, very tight in the poll and neck.  His rider says he feels like a jack hammer in the front when he moves.  Any suggestions on how to handle this?

Enjoy this tongue-in-cheek video of Jim teaching horses how to do the scapula release.
