News From Jim

Hi everyone,  Jim here.
Fall colors have started here in Iowa, just in time for me to leave again.  I am heading to California to teach the Advanced 5-day course and then on to Maryland to do the same.  This leads me to announce the new Masterson Method™ Certification process.  We  have been hard at work creating a Masterson Method™ School website for those that want to continue on towards Certification after completing the Advanced 5-day course.  We have re-vamped the process of certification towards more "hands-on" Coaching Courses for students to work one-on-one with Masterson Method™ Certified Practitioner (MMCP) coaches to develop their skills.  Take a look at the explanation here

I am also excited, that starting in 2013, Coralie Hughes will be sharing the Advanced 5-day course instruction with me.  Coralie will be taking over teaching some of the Advanced 5-day courses.  I will be teaching the Final Certification Course.  I am confident that you will find her an excellent instructor and I am looking forward to the new year.

We have a couple of new Certified Practitioners showcased here.  Simon Bontrager is our first Amish Practitioner. Simon is a farrier by trade and has completed the certification without the use of the internet, typewriter or car!  Talk about dedication.

We now have our foot in the door in Poland with a very good new Masterson Method Certified Practitioner, (MMCP) Monika Tolkcaz.  Monika graduated from the Devon, UK course with flying colors. Read below what she wrote.

I wanted to thank Becky Tenges (MMCP) for presenting the Masterson Method™ at the annual meeting of the American Driving Society.  From all reports she did a great job of spreading the word of the benefits of working on your own horse.

On another note, the gals in the office wanted me to let you know that they are offering a promotion until Christmas of "no shipping charges" on all combo (DVD and Books ordered together) for US shipment.  Go to the website  Store and take a look!

That's quite a savings and hopefully will help you whittle down your holiday gift giving list.

Lastly, I found a great new app that I thought I would tell you about.  It's a 3-D Equine Anatomy App made by the producer of my first DVD, Real Bodyworks.  Take a look below to find out more.

We are thinking about creating a calendar, so those photographers out there, take notice.  We want create a Masterson Method inspired calendar of horses releasing; horses on shoulders; and horses in yoga positions that melt your heart or make you laugh.  Read more about it below.

One more thing, did anyone notice the cover of The Horse Journal magazine?  Great picture and an article about the Masterson Method™.  In addition they included an editor's review of the book and dvd. Read here =>

Until then, like me, enjoy your horses!

In a minute (well, sometimes a little longer) Jim demonstrates a Masterson Method™ Technique.  This month, Jim talks about herd dynamics and how it affects working on your own horse.

New Masterson Method™
Certified Practitioner,
Simon Bontrager
(Drakesville, Iowa)

Having grown up on a farm in Northern Missouri, there have always been horses in my life.

In 2002 I went to my first farrier clinic, a Cytek Clinic on Natural Shoeing. As I learned more about shoeing and how it relates to the musculoskeletal system, I became more interested in equine bodywork. I started studying different modalities of bodywork and chiropractic in 2005, but I was still looking for something when I found the Masterson Method™ in 2010. I soon found I liked it best, with it's non-resistance approach to releasing restriction in the horse, and it's ability to help with lameness issues. In September of 2012, I became a Certified Masterson Method™ Practitioner.

In 2011 we moved to Southern Iowa, where my farrier business includes several different types of horses in various disciplines, including Halter Hunters, Hunter and Show Jumpers, and Eventers. I now do business from my farm in Drakesville, Iowa as SKB Stables Farrier Service, and travel to parts of Northern Missouri and Southern Iowa specializing in shoeing, bare-foot trimming, and equine bodywork.

Do you see your Method as step between massage and chiropractic?

I think that's a good description.  The short definition of this method is, "An integrated method of bodywork in which you learn to read and use the horse's responses to your touch to allow the horse to release tension in key junctions of the body that most affect performance."

The two main aspects of this are;

1)    learning to read the horse's responses to touch, and

2)    applying that to key junctions of the body that most affect performance.

One of the working principles of this Method is that when you move a joint or junction through a range of motion (even a small range of motion) in a relaxed state, the horse's body will release tension that has accumulated in that area.

Without making an "adjustment" you can get the horse to release tension in connective tissue and muscles around a junction by "asking" it to move through the resistance in a relaxed state.

The key is in learning how to read visual and palpable responses from the horse that will tell you:

1)    where the horse has accumulated the tension,

2)    how much pressure (or non-pressure) to use to keep the horse from bracing against a release of the tension, and

3)   when the horse has released the tension.

That's the beauty of this work.

New Certified Practitioner from Poland, Monika Tolkacz
by Monika Tolkacz

Monika was born in Poland where she currently resides. Her horse adventures date back to her childhood days and have been going on now for 25 years.  During that time she has been through all the stages of a horse-rider's career starting from a recreational rider, to a sport horse riding helper, a professional rider and a riding coach, and ending up as a barn manager.

Besides her current work with horses, she also deals with hippotherapy.   Her attachment to horses under her care prevented her from going to study veterinary medicine.  In 2001 Monika graduated from the Faculty of Animal Breeding and Biology at Natural Sciences University in Poznań.  Afterwards, she was totally engrossed in her work at the stables. Her real dream, however, was that of bringing help to horses, which led her to Jim Masterson.  As soon as she got an initial idea of his method, she realized she was on the right track to fulfilling her dream.  By taking part in the course she hit the bull's eye.

At present, she is covering hundreds of kilometers working with a whole range of horses  including the sporting horses,
recreational, elderly, rescued, injured, and those undergoing rehabilitation.

Thanks to the Masterson Method™, horses are being helped not only physically, but also mentally. Monika very often works with horses from mental trauma and helps them to regain confidence in people.  In order to eliminate the negative factors affecting the horse body, Monika cooperates with a farrier, a saddle fitter, a Silversand Horsemanship Instructor and with Dr. Gerd Heuschmann, during his trips to Poland, owing to his knowledge concerning horse biomechanics and training. Monika tries to make riders realize the extent of the influence their riding style exerts on a horse's psycho-physical condition.

A Testimonial on the Techniques.

I love getting your newsletter. I would like to point out that although you primarily work with sport horses, your program works equally well for horses that are pets and trail horses. I have a Paso that used to be quite a spook. When I started doing the Masterson Method with him it made a tremendous difference in his attitude and relaxation. He has gotten to be quite the excellent trail horse and I credit the massage techniques, in part, with my ability to turn him into the wonderful horse he is now. Before I teach him something new, I make sure he is stretched and relaxed, then he can learn better. He loves it when we have spa day.

Thank you. I hope that others will try your methods and realize that they are not just for elite horses but that all horses can benefit.

Another Ask Jim:

How do massage and chiropractic relate and interact?

Just to be sure, I consulted my dictionary on this one. A quick look gives the definition of chiropractic as follows,

"a system of complementary medicine based on the diagnosis and manipulative treatment of misalignments of the joints, esp. those of the spinal column, which are held to cause other disorders by affecting the nerves, muscles, and organs."

, and massage is,

"the rubbing and kneading of muscles and joints of the body with the hands to relieve tension or pain"

So in short I think how chiropractic and massage relate is that traditional chiropractic focuses on making adjustments to the skeleton to cause a release of tension in muscles that may be creating skeletal imbalance and misalignments, whereas traditional massage focuses on directly massaging the muscles to release tension, that may be creating the imbalances and misalignments in the skeleton. Both are complementary and are aimed at restoring balance to the body, but from different angles.
