Greetings!

October is here and as the leaves fall many exciting things are happening in our community.  From United Way Campaigns to Flap Jack Fundraisers there is something for everyone.   With October being both Manufacturing Month and National Disability Employment Awareness Month we're hoping that you can still find a little time to spend with us.   For YPR, it is the Roaring 20s Wine Gala; Register NOW,  in case we haven't told you already and prepare to be entertained with period attire, live music and a $1000.00 grand prize raffle donated by Rasmussen's Diamonds. However you do it, we encourage you to enjoy this month, take in the bright colors, cool breezes and football evenings as we wind down our year.

Donations Welcome!

YPR Hope Lodge Donation Drive

Facing cancer is hard. Having to travel out of town for treatment can make it even harder. Yet, the American Cancer Society has a place where cancer patients and their caregivers can find help and hope when home is far away - an American Cancer Society Hope Lodge.

Each Hope Lodge offers cancer patients and their caregivers a free place to stay when their best hope for effective treatment may be in another city. Not having to worry about where to stay or how to pay for lodging allows guests to focus on getting well. Hope Lodge provides a nurturing, home-like environment where guests can retreat to private rooms or connect with others. Every Hope Lodge also offers a variety of resources and information about cancer and how best to fight the disease.

YPR will be collecting donated items from the Hope Lodge's needs list. Check your ability to donate with your heart, as we are hoping to make a difference in the lives of those battling cancer.

We will  also accept monetary donations to the American Cancer Society. Checks can be mailed to:

Connecting People and ImprovingLives!

For the Racine Community Foundation (RCF), there is no greater purpose than to serve the needs of the citizens of Racine County. RCF remains steadfast to the vision of those individuals who established the organization in 1975, and they embrace the trust placed in us to carry on that vision. The increasing success of the Racine Community Foundation is the result of its responsiveness to the needs of the community, not only as a grant-making organization, or networking resource for other non-profits, but also as a home base for those who seek to begin, or grow, their charitable giving.

Your gift to the Foundation can be made in almost any way that fits your charitable giving goals. Whether you want to make a one-time gift, or wish to build toward a permanent fund over time, the Racine Community Foundation can work directly with you, or your financial advisor, to establish a way to give that is right for you

Their Vision

  1. Collaborate with donors to create their personal legacies.
  2. Robustly manage our endowment under the principles of sustainable growth.
  3. Understand and address the needs of individuals and organizations in our community.
  4. Provide the necessary leadership to maximize the connection between all human and monetary services and resources for those who live and work in Racine County.

Their Mission

Our mission is to enhance the quality of life for the people of Racine
County by encouraging and providing opportunities for charitable giving and by managing and distributing the funds in a responsible manner.

Many Ways to Give

  1. Create your own fund - When you create a fund, you have the right to name it and select its purpose in accordance with your wishes.
  2. Contribute to an existing fund - Your gift can either be placed in our General fund or you may designate your gift to one of our existing funds.
  3. Make a bequest in your will - Perpetuate your charitable work in a living memorial (this may allow a reduction in taxes).
  4. Transfer a private foundation - Transferring private foundation assets allows the private foundation's identity to be retained and allows members to serve as advisors.
  5. Retain income from a charitable gift - Give assets to the Foundation and receive income for life or a specific period of time (this may allow a reduction in taxes).

Types of Gifts

  1. Cash gifts Cash gifts are deductible up to 50% of Adjusted Gross Income. A five-year carryover is allowed if the deduction surpasses the allowable limit within the year the gift was made.
  2. Long-term Appreciated Assets If you own long-term appreciated assets (stock, real estate, etc.), you may recognize substantial capital gains tax savings by gifting those shares directly to the Racine Community Foundation, rather than selling them and then making the charitable gift. Donations of long-term appreciated assets are deductible up to 30% of Adjusted Gross Income, with a five year carryover allowed, if the deduction surpasses the allowable limit within the year the gift was made.
  3. Life insurance You can name the Racine Community Foundation as the beneficiary of an existing life insurance policy or on a new policy. Premium payments are tax-deductible and this is a relatively low-cost way to make a substantial gift to benefit your favorite charity

What: 19th Annual Racine Literacy Council Community Spelling Bee
When: Friday, November 8, 2013 5:30 - 9:00 pm
Where: Roma Lodge, 7130 Spring St. Racine, WI
Why? It's more exciting than a barrel of buzzing bees, and way more fun! The Racine Literacy Council presents the Community Spelling Bee each year to raise funds for its adult literacy programs, primarily one-to-one tutoring by trained volunteer tutors. These programs are central to helping our community realize the importance and impact of improving literacy in Racine County.
The Spelling Bee is a friendly, yet thoroughly exciting and spirited, competition among a field of 3-person teams. Everyone who participates is a winner, just for competing. The worst thing that can happen is you will learn a few new words to impress your friends and family. Companies/organizations are encouraged to sponsor a team of their own, or to sponsor or co-sponsor a team from a non-profit organization. See the registration form for sponsorship details, or to register your team today! You are also invited to attend the event as a spectator/fan. The evening begins with a delicious Roma Lodge dinner and cash bar. The competition gets underway a little after 6:00 pm. An audience participation spelling bee challenge, an "A-Z" Silent Auction and a Raffle round out the evening's activities.
You won't believe how much fun it is, until you experience it for yourself!
For more information about fielding a team, or sponsoring a team from a non-profit, or to make your dinner reservation, or to purchase raffle tickets, please contact the Racine Literacy Council.
