We are excited to be returning to Franconia Golf Course on Friday for the Spirit of Springfield Golf Classic. We have more than 100 golfers anxious and ready to compete for the Joe Superneau Cup and five area mayor's who will putt for the rights to the Spirit of Springfield Cup.

Proceeds from the golf tournament allow the Spirit of Springfield to present free, family-friendly events like the World's Largest Pancake Breakfast and next month's Star Spangled Springfield.

Flapjacks, Fun and Commissioner Fitchet

The 28th annual World's Largest Pancake Breakfast was a fun filled morning in Downtown Springfield. Springfield Police Commissioner was honored to serve as the Honorary Chairman as one of his last official duties as Springfield Police Commissioner. The Edward Boland School Chorus honored with his personalized version of the "Pancake Song."

Thanks to all the volunteers who worked tirelessly, the generous donors, the talented performers and the breakfast sponsor, MGM Springfield represented by Chuck Irving.

Bright Nights Research Results Are In

After a semester of preparing appropriate questions, gathering the data and then analyzing it, students from Western New England University provided the Spirit of Springfield with some valuable information about Bright Nights at Forest Park. The data will be used to enhance the visitors experience, attract new visitors and repeat visitors.

The presentation by the young men and women of Dr. Janelle Goodnight's Market Research Class are a fine example of the talents that blossom at Western New England University and other area colleges.

The Springfield Department of Parks, Buildings and Recreation Management also called upon the classes initiatives to collect data to determine the feasibility of a year round restaurant in Forest Park.
Commissioner Fitchet Farewell
Friends and colleagues toasted and roasted Springfield Police Commissioner William Fichet as he wrapped up his 42-year career at the Springfield Police Department. He was honored by Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno, Springfield City Council President Michael Fenton, Sheriff Michael Ashe, the Western Massachusetts Chiefs of PoliceAssociation and retired Springfield Fire Commissioner Gary Cassanelli.

The Spirit of Springfield was honored to assist the Springfield Police Department with the May 29 program in Springfield City Council Chambers.
Bright Nights' Wild Bill Nominated for Howdy Award

With a constant smile, an eagerness to help and the desire to make everyone's Bright Nights' visit their finest, Wild Bill Vezina is always at hand. He works tirelessly with his Forest Park crewmembers to install, maintain and remove the light displays. During the event, he is always on the move to insure traffic flows, provides vehicle assistance and provides a friendly welcome.

The Spirit of Springfield was pleased that the Greater Springfield Convention and Visitors Bureau has chosen him as a finalist to receive a Howdy Award. While judges make their decision, the public is invited to vote for Wild Bill Vezina as Howdy's Peoples Choice Award

Voting ends June 8 and awards will be announced June 9 .

John R. Barbieri,

Commissioner, Springfield Police Department

For the past 26 years, I have proudly served as a member of the Springfield Police Department and look  forward to continuing  to serve as your new Police Commissioner.

I am anxious to implement my vision that includes planned incremental changes within the Springfield Police Department. My goals include the replication of the C3 policing model, improved community-police relations, increased citizen involvement, execution of real-time crime analysis and the applying of quality assurance protocols within the police department to improve citizens' satisfaction in the delivery of modern police services.

My agenda is ambitious. I will work hard to forge new relationships and build upon existing ones. I will call upon and partner with community leaders, citizen stakeholders, local non-profits and faith- based organizations to work closely with me and all the members of the Springfield Police Department.

Please join me Thursday, June 5 at 10AM in Old First Church as I take the Oath of the Springfield Police Commissioner.  Thank you to the Spirit of Springfield for coordinating this special occasion.
