AGA Releases Genetic Tools for Ranchers

The AGA has recently released the new Smart Select Service data management system which provides genetic tools to aid commercial cattlemen in the herd selection process. Smart Select Service is available for all commercial producers who want to increase the value of their herds for the potential to increase profitability. Enrolling females for $1/head allows commercial producers access to a herd management database to manage all cowherd data. In addition, herd management reports will be made available to producers including herd summary reports, dam and progeny reports, and herdsire reports.

In addition, the AGA will be offering Smart Select Service members, also known as performance members, access to the Feeder Profit Index (FPI) and Stayability score on both males and females with appropriate data recorded.

For more information on Smart Select Service, visit  www.gelbvieh.org/smartselect.html or contact Kelli Retallick at the AGA at 303-465-2333 or kellir@gelbvieh.org.

Submitting DNA Samples

In order to make the DNA testing process as efficient as possible and to ensure results are received in a timely manner, it is suggested that all DNA orders for registered animals are made on the AGA Online Registry System. Once an order is submitted, a copy of the order form must be sent with the sample directly to Geneseek at 4131 N. 48th St., Lincoln, NE 68504. If a physical DNA sample is not received at the lab after six weeks of the original DNA order date the order will be cancelled. If an order is cancelled, the producer must then re-submit the DNA order through the AGA Online Registry System.

It is encouraged that members are diligent about sending in DNA samples in a timely manner after order submission. If you have questions about this policy or about DNA testing, please contact Kelli Retallick or Dolores Gravley at 303-465-2333.
