Letter from the Dean
Dear , I cannot believe we are here at the end of Summer once again. One of my favorite professors at Georgetown used to say "he could hear the creatures packing their bags" to take over the quiet solitude of his campus. In some ways, we educators never get over the anxious anticipation you are feeling right now about the start of school. August always provides for me a moment of reflection, looking both backward and forward. This year in particular encourages our school to engage in such reflection. We look back with pride over 225 years of education in the spirit of St. Ignatius and we look forward to the installation of our new President, Father Scott Pilarz, SJ. There is great anticipation and excitement about this new chapter in our long history. I hope you have the opportunity to experience it as you visit our campus this fall. Take some time as well during these final days of August to pause and reflect on the years that have led you to this point in your education. You have worked hard and have been supported by parents, teachers, and coaches. Now you look forward to the opportunity to explore Georgetown Preparatory School. I am excited to get to know you and your family as you examine what it means to be a Hoya. For most of you, this will be the first experience you have making a major life discernment. Making these decisions, through contemplative reflection, is a hallmark of the 480 year tradition of the Jesuits. As the oldest Jesuit school in the United States, we hold dear this tradition and want to help you learn to make these types of informed decisions. It is incredibly important that as you examine different schools you try to imagine yourself as a member of that community. What do you think of the teachers? Can you see yourself fitting in? How will you contribute to the school? Who is that school calling you to be?
Please enjoy our videos, website, and "fast forward" admissions site www.iamahoya.org as you think about visiting our school. If you are interested in spending a day with us, 5-8th graders can attend our Open House and 8th graders can participate in Hoya for a Day. | The Georgetown Prep Difference |
At Georgetown Prep we continue our 225 year tradition of the good work of the Society of Jesus, forming men of competence, conscience, courage, and compassion. Hopefully, you will become a part of that history, leaving your mark on our storied institution. Enjoy your final days of Summer. As an English teacher at heart, I cannot help but turn to poetry as I reflect on what is ahead. Please enjoy this poem "Corsons Inlet" by A.R. Ammons as you think about the end of Summer and the new beginnings before you. Hoya Saxa, Mr. Brian J. Gilbert Dean of Admissions Georgetown Preparatory School 301-214-1215
