Vol. IX, Issue No. 3

Virginia Wine Lover

There's lots to celebrate this March.  First, and perhaps most important, the winter of 2013 is almost behind us and spring beckons.  The wineries are coming back to life after a long, bitter winter.  Tasting Rooms are reopening and weekend events are moving into high gear.  It will soon be warm enough for spring festivals, but in the meantime, the Chesapeake Spring Wine Festival will be held indoors this weekend.

March is also designated as Wine & Dine Month, with restaurants and wine shops across the state showcasing and promoting Virginia wine by the glass.  Join in by asking for a glass of Virginia wine when you're dining out.

A very big event in Richmond on March 11-14 is the Wineries Unlimited Trade Show & Conference.  One of the country's largest wine industries events, it draws hundreds of attendees involved in the wine and craft beer industries.  Be sure to register below for the Sweepstakes that includes a super package of tickets and hotel accommodations.

Doukénie is our featured Winery of the Month for March, and we encourage you to visit.  On March 22 winemaker Sebastien Marquet will share the secrets of making an excellent blend, and the lucky winner of the Doukénie Sweepstakes (see below) will join in creating the winery's next Vintner's reserve.

There's a lot going on this March, so get out and join us along the trail...the wine trail, that is.  Cheers!

An Escape from Reality in Virginia's Wine Country

Located near historic Leesburg in the town of Purcellville, Doukénie Winery is made up of 415 acres nestled in Loudoun County, Virginia's famed "wine country," just 50 miles from Washington, DC. This wine farm provides visitors and locals an escape from reality while increasing their knowledge of wine and wine making.

Founded in 1985 by the Bazaco family, Doukénie Winery produced its first vintage in 1995 and within the last several years has received numerous prestigious awards. The winery produces four to five thousand cases per year consisting of five white wines, one dessert wine and nine red wines. All can be purchased through their Heritage Club or at the winery.

2014 Wineries Unlimited Conference

Greater Richmond Convention Center
www.wineriesunlimited.com

The 38th annual Wineries Unlimited Conference and Trade Show returns to the Greater Richmond Convention Center on March 11 through 14.  The wine industry event includes four days of sessions and a two-day trade show.  Produced by Vineyard & Winery Management (VWM), the conference has traditionally been organized specifically for the needs of the eastern U.S. wine market.  The event is now taking on a new life by adding craft brew to its program.  It continues to be the premier industry event of its kind in the region, with over 1,500 expected in total attendance.

The 2014 conference is workshop oriented rather than structured in themed session tracks.  Content is focused on topics facing today's Eastern wine industry, including the latest in enology, viticulture, marketing and financial issues.  Key speakers include Dr. Tony Wolf, professor of viticulture at Virginia Tech; Steve Parkes, Owner and Lead Instructor, American Brewers Guild; and Chris Pearmund, Executive Winemaker at Pearmund Cellars who has put together team of industry experts for a day-long workshop for industry newcomers.
