Vol. IX, Issue No. 1

Dear Friend,

Cheers to the New Year and all good wishes for a peaceful and prosperous 2014!  We look forward to continuing to bring you news about Virginia wines...the people who make them and the ever-growing number of people who consume them.

Our readers love recipes, and the "Recipe of the Month" is one of the most well read features in the newsletter. This month we are repeating a recipe for
Boeuf Bourguignon which was an overwhelming favorite from last January.  Because of the popularity of chili weekends at many wineries, we are including our favorite chili recipe and ask that you send us yours by entering the Great Virginia Wine Lover Chili Contest.

Winter is a great time to get away on the weekend and visit your favorite Virginia wineries, where the tasting room may welcome you with a glass of wine by a warm fire.  Be sure to check out January Events for tours and tastings and other special activities through February 2.

Hope to see you along the trail... the wine trail, that is.

RICHMOND'S BERKELEY HOTEL . . .

PERFECT FOR A WEEKEND GET-AWAY.

After the hustle and bustle of the holidays, a get-away weekend has lots of appeal.  We recently spent a couple of leisurely days in Richmond, staying at the beautiful Berkeley Hotel.  It's conveniently situated downtown in the Shockoe Slip neighborhood where restored tobacco warehouses are now home to a great selection of restaurants and boutique shops.

The Berkeley has an interesting history.  It opened in 1988, but the attention to detail and to era leads most  visitors to believe that it is much older.  Since the site is in a historic district of Richmond, the hotel was designed to be architecturally similar to the buildings surrounding it.  The original idea of a European-style hotel became the focus for deciding upon a name which came about in recognition of the Berkeley Castle in England and the Berkeley Plantation in Virginia.

Malcolm Jamison, owner of the Berkeley Plantation, was The Berkeley Hotel's very first guest at the grand opening.  Within just months, the hotel achieved the AAA four-diamond rating, an honor it has held every year since.

TODD HAYMORE REAPPOINTED TO AGRICULTURE POST

Governor Terry McAuliffe's reappointment of Todd Haymore as Secretary of Agriculture has received high praise from the state's wine industry.  Haymore has been a champion of Virginia wines and he has worked to promote their growth both domestically and overseas.

A recent editorial in the Richmond Times-Dispatch stated "He (Haymore) is a person of absolute competence and integrity.  By appointing Haymore and similar individuals, governors of both parties have expressed a determination to put the state's interest ahead of partisan advantage.  We toast Haymore-and McAuliffe and McDonnell-with a glass of Viognier."

BARBOURSVILLE RECEIVES RECOGNITION FROM LEADING WINE PUBLICATION

Vineyard and Winery Management has named Luca Paschina among the 20 leading individuals in North American wine.  Paschina is the Winemaker and General Manager of Bourboursville Vineyards.  The magazine is recognized as one of the leading professional publications in the wine industry.
