Beach Replenishment Funding

Supporting Increase Shore Protection Funding

Prior to the Chamber's Press Conference in Avalon on Tuesday, June 30th, Vicki sat down with Comcast Newsmakers. She shared the important role beach replenishment plays economically, not only for our tourism industry but for all of our beach and mainland communities. Adding to the importance, beach replenishment forms a protective barrier for our sensitive ecosystems. See Vicki's remarks by clicking the image above.

~ PRESS RELEASE ~

Support for Increased Shore Protection Funding

The Cape May County Chamber of Commerce hosted a press conference to highlight the need for increased shore protection dollars in New Jersey with a beach project as the backdrop at 13th Street in Avalon.

According to Vicki Clark, President of the Chamber, "New Jersey's beaches are the top visitor destination for our $40 billion tourism industry and tourism is the economic driver in Cape May County.  Beach replenishment projects are necessary to protect life, property, natural resources and local economies of shore communities".

Margot Walsh, Executive Director of the Jersey Shore Partnership spoke, encouraging concerned citizens to sign an online petition in support of this funding increase.  "Protecting and replenishing our beaches is an urgent matter for the entire state, not just our four coastal counties".

Avalon Mayor Marty Pagliughi cited the need to increase funding due to the increased number of beach projects needed along the coast, especially since Superstorm Sandy, and the return on investment through the state's tourism industry. "New Jersey's tourism industry supports nearly 500,000 jobs."

Cape May County Freeholder-Vice Director and Sea Isle City Mayor Len Desiderio thanked Senator Van Drew, Assemblyman Andrzejczak, and Assembly Fiocchi who have sponsored S2775 and A4215 in the legislature that would increase the state's current funding of $25 million to $50 million and address issues that also exist along the Delaware and Raritan Bays and interior New Jersey rivers.
