Increase NJ's Shore Protection Fund
by Guest Speaker
Margo Walsh
The Jersey Shore Partnership

Walsh will discuss JSP's effort to increase funding to $50 million in recognition that coastal protection must include back bays, barrier islands, and inland waterways. Beach replenishment funding in the amount of $25 million (annually) began in 1991 after the devastating 1991 "Halloween" storm in order to insure that state and federal funding would be available to protect New Jersey's 127 miles of coastal shoreline. "Sandy" changed the footprint of New Jersey's coastal areas and awakened the critical need to be proactive, not reactive, in preparing for future storms.

Does Your Guest Have a Service Dog?

People with dogs are seen everywhere. We love our animals and want to take them with us. From the big box store in the shopping cart, in tote bags, to restaurants, hotels and public transportation. The question is, are they really trained service animals?

Cats, ferrets, birds or other animals cannot help a disabled person by performing a task. These pets are clearly not service animals. We think of dogs such as Labradors or Golden Retrievers as being trained assistance dogs, but what if you saw someone with a tiny Chihuahua or a small Terrier mix? Would you automatically afford the person the same rights?

COAST GUARD ENLISTED MEMORIAL

"Help us in honoring those who have paid the ultimate price. The Coast Guard Enlisted Memorial Foundation is gathering donations to build a memorial in recognition of the over 1500 Coast Guardsmen who have lost their lives in the performance of duty. The memorial is planned for construction on the grounds of Training Center Cape May, NJ, the current birthplace of the service's enlisted corps. Along with the physical memorial the foundation will maintain this electronic memorial which is constantly being expanded with further background information, photos, and historical records."

Stop in the name of turtles!

Be on the lookout for our native diamondback terrapins that will be crossing local roads to lay their eggs on higher grounds. Should you chose to stop and help a terrapin, please first make sure you are not putting yourself or other motorists at risk, then carefully help the terrapin cross in the direction it was going. For more tips on helping terrapins, including what to do if you should encounter an injured terrapin, checkout this Helpful Page From The Wetlands Institute.
