Forum examines future of N.J. fishing
Written by Christian Hetrick

Is there a future for recreational fishing in New Jersey?

Local leaders in the fishing and boating industries tried to answer that question Tuesday evening during a forum at the Greate Bay Country Club in Somers Point. The information given by the presenters often made that future seem bleak, but all said that if interested parties come together, that can change. The forum was sponsored by the Cape May County Chamber of Commerce.

Brandon Muffley, administrator for the Marine Fisheries Administration within the state Division of Fish and Wildlife, urged anglers to supply state workers with information on fishing trips and catches starting in 2016. That's when the state takes over some surveying from the federal government, which he said sometimes misidentified fish and often surveyed the same people.

United States Postal Service Celebrates Sustainability on Earth Day at Business @ the Beach Expo

The Avalon and Wildwood post offices went green and celebrated Earth Day 2015 by promoting the wide range of sustainability initiatives available through the Postal Service's™ Lean Green Teams. "Our Lean Green Teams work on the Postal Service's™ efforts to help create an organization of conservation", stated Avalon Postmaster, Melissa Lomax. "These teams assist our local post offices in their efforts to become leaner, greener, and more sustainable," Lomax added. Wildwood Postmaster Bernadette Puodziunas explained, "Our local post offices look for ways to maintain sustainability by shutting off lights or equipment not in use and by trying to save money by finding ways to use and buy fewer supplies. We even find more ways to increase recycling, such as with our local post office lobby recycling containers, which state, "Read, Respond, Recycle Your Mail," confirmed Puodziunas.

Cape May Council Makes 'Coast Guard Community Week' Official
Cape May County Herald
Written by Vince Conti

Following an announcement and resolution at a freeholders' meeting in March, resolutions have been passed across the county's municipalities in honor of the county's designation as a Coast Guard Community. The designation, only the second such in the nation, is in recognition of the special relationship between Cape May County and the Coast Guard. Cape May, the home of the Coast Guard training facility, took up the matter at its council business meeting April 21.

Captain G. Todd Prestidge, commanding officer of Coast Guard Training Center, was present as council passed its resolution designating the first full week of May each year as "Coast Guard Community Week" and establishing the 2015 "Coast Guard Community Festival."

Cape May coastal residents question dredge schedule
Written by Cindy Nevitt

How can one dredge be in two places at the same time?

And if it can't be in two places at the same time, where's it going to go first?

These are questions officials in upper Cape May County coastal towns are asking, and state and federal officials are sidestepping, as Avalon has entered the beach replenishment picture months after schedules to dredge on Ludlam Island were announced.

King Kong is coming back to Wildwood

A ride called Kong will open by Memorial Day weekend on Morey's Surfside Pier in North Wildwood. Featuring eight shark-themed passenger cars that will fly 26 feet in the air, Kong is 20 feet tall and sits atop a raised platform 11 feet above the boardwalk. Kong is a reboot of a Pier ride that opened in 1972 and closed in 1980. The ride is expected to be open by the Memorial Day weekend.
