Five Ways to Improve Education
Monday, September 15, 2014 - 9:00am
Written by Thomas J. Donohue

Last week the U.S. Chamber of Commerce released its Leaders & Laggards report on K-12 education. The data paint a grim picture. Without meaningful reform and sustained improvement, the United States will lose its edge in global competition, put the economy at risk, and consign future generations of Americans to limited opportunities.

Acknowledging that we have a problem is the "easy" part. Addressing it is where things get tough. Here are five ways we can work to improve our education system:

First, stay the course on accountability. It's not always popular, but accountability is crucial to closing the achievement gap. If there are no consequences for underperforming schools, the status quo will prevail and broad swaths of students-most of them minority or low income-will continue to slip through the cracks. This is unacceptable for a nation founded on the promise of opportunity, and it's a recipe for economic decline.

N.J. may up minimum wage
...For employees relying on tips
The Press of Atlantic City
By DEVIN LORING Staff Writer

As workers in New Jersey will see the minimum wage increase to $8.38 an hour on Jan. 1, employees that rely on tips might also receive a boost. The federal minimum wage for tipped employees has been frozen at $2.13 since 1993.

The state Assembly's Labor Committee passed a bill in March that proposes a minimum wage hike for employees that earn tips in New Jersey.

The bill (A857), passed 5-3, proposes that employers pay tipped workers 40 percent of the state minimum wage - $8.25 in New Jersey - amounting to about $3.30 an hour by the end of 2014. By the end of 2015, the bill includes an additional increase to 69 percent of the minimum wage, or $5.70.

However, the final calculations of the new tipped minimum wages are expected to be slightly higher, because the minimum wage in New Jersey increases based on inflation as determined by the Consumer Price Index.
