When the cat is away . . .

Are you or your money counters going on vacation this summer? Make sure to identify someone who can handle the Sunday collection in your absence. If you run out of options within your own church, perhaps a neighboring church can lend a hand. There is an Episcopal church every 5 to 8 miles in our diocese, so it's no great stretch.

Look up a neighboring church in the diocesan directory online.

Consult the Manual of Business Affairs for a refresher on proper money-counting procedures and other internal controls. (See Chapter II.)

Setting up and managing endowments

While clergy are largely responsible for getting parish endowments going and growing, treasurers have to manage them.

Whether you are just getting started or have had an endowment for many years, the right structure and guidance matter -- and Episcopal Church Foundation (ECF) has resources to help you chart a good course.

Through ECF you can get sample endowment fund policies and guidance on the fundamentals of endowment management, learn about prudent investing for accounts of all sizes, and find out how to help educate your parish on making bequests through wills, maturing life-income gifts, and direct cash gifts.

Access ECF's endowment resources here.

A great summer beach read

It's summer vacation time, and we're all in search of a good read, but while you're relaxing on RI's sandy shores, consider reading up on how local nonprofits are fundraising and managing their money.

While a church is not just a nonprofit, the other nonprofits in RI are still competing with you for donations and bequests from charitable Rhode Islanders, many of whom may be your parishioners.

If we don't keep track of other organization's fundraising plans and money management best practices, we could fall behind and lose out on potential gifts.

Third Sector New England is a regional resource with a mission is to build the leadership and effectiveness of nonprofits. Check out their Insights blog especially the sections on fund development and money matters.

Free TENS resources for treasurers

As a treasurer, there are many resources you can benefit from at The Episcopal Network for Stewardship (TENS) even though the campaign planning isn't your job.

TENS is an association of church leaders who understand, practice, and proclaim God's call to generosity.

TENS has excellent money-management resources for treasurers, including information on annual, designated, and planned giving, personal financial planning, best practices, a blog, and more.

Best of all, the resources are brought to you free through the diocesan membership.

Diocesan login info has recently changed. Here's how you can get started:
