3 RI Churches Stream TENS Conference

The Episcopal Network for Stewardship (TENS) is offering a great opportunity to treasurers and stewardship committees this year: They are recording a webcast of their June conference called "Walking the Way." The conference tackles stewardship, but also digital giving, legacy planning, and other topics in a treasurer's portfolio. Check out the topics here.

The keynote addresses and four of the workshops will be available for streaming afterward -- and several R.I. congregations are hosting webcast events so that clergy, treasurers, and stewardship committees can benefit from the resources. Come get inspired!

Please check with church to RSVP and verify which workshops they will webcast:

Beat the heat & the summer giving slump

If your parish doesn't yet accept online gifts, we've got a resource just for you.

10 Things You Should Know About Online Giving takes only a few minutes to read, but it lays out everything you need to know to get started accepting donations online.

Beyond tips and best practices (of which there are plenty), it offers statistics that will radically alter how you and other church leaders think about online giving. It also includes questions to help you discern the importance of online giving in all its many forms. Best of all, it is simple and to the point -- a good summer read.

Share the booklet with your clergy and vestry today, and beat the summer giving slump.

(Want something for online givers to put in the offering plate each week? Here's a customizable card that you can laminate and have on hand.)

Take it from me: Lessons from a rookie treasurer

Life as a church treasurer can be tough -- but there are things you can do to make your job easier.

Whether you're just learning the ropes or are trying to tweak how you get things done, this article from ECF Vestry Papers can help.

Written by former treasurer Tyler D. Schleicher of St. Anne's in Ankeny, Iowa, it takes a deep look at three practices that make your role as treasurer more sustainable:

1. Use professional accounting software

2. Implement automatic withdrawal

3. Learn to delegate responsibly

Best of all, the article unpacks how little changes over time can make a big difference, allowing you to serve as a top advisor rather than a check writer and money counter.

Breaking it down and bringing it in

Quarterly reports help set your church on firmer financial footing (and they make your life easier, too).

According to Leading Ideas from the Lewis Church Center for Leadership, when you furnish quarterly reports showing where people are on their pledge, they are more likely to meet or exceed their planned giving. (Here's why.)

That's great news for the church, but as treasurer you might be worried about all the extra work involved in quarterly reports.

But take heart. Far from increasing your workload, quarterly reports can actually make your job easier. That's because if you true things up several times during the year, you're already well on your way for next year's taxes and parochial reports. And those aren't the only benefits.
