Plan ahead for weather-related closings

'Tis the season for snow and ice, and so it pays to plan ahead for church closings, whether Sunday services or midweek meetings. Start by identifying in advance one person who can manage this simple three-step process for when you need to cancel activities:

1. Post closings on your church's website.

In an emergency, people often check your website first, hoping to find the most up-to-date information. Always list closings on your site (even if you also send a parish-wide email or start a phone tree) so you don't inadvertently miss someone in your community.

2. Send an email to Ruth Meteer (ruth@episcopalri.org).

During last year's superstorm, many parishioners checked the diocesan site when their own churches closed, to see if others nearby might be open. Send us an email if you're closed, and we'll post your cancellation, too.

3. Report your closing to the news media.

Magnify your reach: Send word through the RI Broadcasters Association's online system. They'll pass your info along for free to every major news outlet in the surrounding area. It can take a few days to receive your "business/school closing account" access code, so sign up today to be sure you're ready to go whenever snow hits.

Offering for Haiti 1/12/14

As we near the fourth anniversary of the devastating 2010 earthquake in Haiti, Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori has asked all churches to take a special offering toward rebuilding Holy Trinity Cathedral in Port-au-Prince.

Just two months ago, architects unveiled a compelling vision of the new cathedral space, a spiritual and physical sanctuary at the heart of the city.

Built on the same corner where the old one stood, it will house three historic murals salvaged from the ruins. The new structure will also be designed "to be self-sufficient in the event of a future emergency and to serve as a safe haven to those in need of help."

Please join with others around The Episcopal Church and take a special collection on Sun., Jan. 12, 2014, to help raise funds to help rebuild Holy Trinity.

Diocesan music license

With less than one month left in the year, you may be looking at renewing your church's copyright licenses for music. Before you do, take note: The Diocese has purchased Church Publishing's RiteWorship for all of our churches, effective 1/1/14.

If you have subscribed to RiteWorship in the past,
you don't need to renew your current subscription.

If you aren't familiar with RiteWorship, check it out to see what it includes before you renew your other licenses. The music you use may already be covered by RiteWorship.

In addition to permission to use the music included in the program, RiteWorship also has a nifty church bulletin builder that may make your parish administrator's job a whole lot easier.
