Turning a challenge into an opportunity

It can be a challenge to worship out of doors, as Church Beyond the Walls well knows. This emerging ministry in Downtown Providence seeks to build Christian community where physical and spiritual hungers are fed together on the streets.

The Rev. Edmund Harris reports that "one of our biggest worship challenges comes from the ambient noise in and around the park. Between the car engines, sirens, music emanating from the skating rink, cell phones and chatter, it can be darn near impossible to hear the service."

Recently, though, this challenge turned into a powerful opportunity to proclaim the Gospel. Here's what happened.
Spreading the word: Church is here for you

On a gorgeous Saturday afternoon in late September, thousands gathered in Roger Williams Memorial Park in the heart of Providence for the eleventh annual Rhode Island Rally4Recovery.

Part of National Recovery Month, the event served as a celebration of those in long-term recovery from addiction or mental health disorders. It offered inspiration and support to those who may be wrestling with their own or a loved one's addictions. And it spread the message that people can -- and do -- recover from substance abuse and mental health disorders.

What is the role of faith in helping people beat addiction? What, practically, can churches do? Find out more here.

And on October 5, Holy Trinity in Tiverton welcomed the Rev. John Higginbotham (below) to his new role. More photos here.
