Shabbat Shalom
shabbat shalom

Join us this Friday, September 9, at 7:30 p.m. with Rabbi Mark Kram on the bima.  We'll be considering the topic of "Trump's Tallit."

Oneg Shabbat will follow the service.

The Rabbi's Blog

Many of us couldn't believe our eyes. In a African-American Christian church presidential candidate Donald Trump was given a Talit by the Pastor.

OK - what the heck is going on? Is he appealing to the Jewish vote? Is he appealing to African American Christians who like to wear Jewish prayer shawls? Is it a case of "when in Rome, do as the Romans"?  I was not able to see the congregation gathered but I wonder whether anyone else was wearing a Talit?

The Talit is a pretty special garment that has great symbolism for us Jews. And some of us might even take offense at this seemingly, but without question highly planned, cavalier gesture.

Aside from what you will hear on Friday night at Shabbat services, we probably need to take another look at the garments we wear in order to enhance our prayer experiences.  Who and why and when do we wear them?  And what are they for - really?

Join us Friday night for a conversation not so much about the election, but about some customs and traditions to help us during the month of Elul.

Have a great week!

Adult Ed:  What is the Talmud?

"Tzei Ul'mad - Come and Hear" is the formulation often beginning a Talmudic discussion.  It consists of  books of Jewish law.  Although, the answers to questions raised are not conclusively recorded, and in order to know what to do (or how to act) in a particular situation, we have to go further than the Talmud (into the Codes of Jewish Law - for ex., the Shulchan Aruch.)
Talmud 101: Part 2, Wednesday, September 7

The uniqueness of the Talmud (Hebrew for "study"), is that "Correct" answers emerge out of the process of argument that fills the Talmud and all the books written to explain it.
As the earliest rabbinic interpretation of the Bible, the Talmud is indispensable to understanding the laws and customs still practiced today. The Talmudic discussion and its conclusions provide us with the origins of our many laws and customs.

To study Talmud is to take one's part in the discourse of the generations
, to add one's own voice to the chorus of conversation and argument that has for nearly two millennia been the form and substance of Jewish law.
Join us and ADD YOUR VOICE to the "discourse of generations."

High Holidays Approach!

It's time to start thinking about High Holiday events.

Reservations will be required for both the Rosh Hashanah Luncheon and Break the Fast.  We'll start taking reservations in about two weeks.  The Rosh Hashanah luncheon cost will be $15 per person, and Break the Fast will be $24 per person.  Both events will be catered.

RSVPs will be required for both, with deadlines to be announced.

What's the Latest on the Mussar Program?

Since Temple Beth Or wants to promote the Mussar program to the community-at-large, we are delaying the start of the program until October 8th.

Just to refresh your memory, Mussar is the study of Jewish ethics and morality, which will help participants explore the practicesnecessary to become more decent human beings. The program, conducted by RabbiMark Kram, in conjunction with the Mussar Institute, will focus on makingpositive conscious choices and mindful actions towards oneself and others and tominimize those traits that are less desirable in each of us.

This program willbe held bi-monthly on the Saturday mornings (10:15 - 11:45 AM) after Rabbi Kram has led services the night before.

We are charging our members only for the cost of the program materials ($36) and will charge non-members $75.  In addition, you do not have to be able to attend every one of the sessions but you will still be able to download and print out all the materials online.

Since we are delaying the start of Mussar, please have a check made out to Beth Or (Mussar in the memo line) for $36 by Tuesday, September 27th.

This is a year long endeavor that will be very enlightening!

Beth Or's response to Zika:

In response to the Zika outbreak, all of the plants, notably bromeliads, and any potential water catchers, have been sprayed with both mosquito insecticide and oil to kill mosquitos and larvae.  Placing oil (eg, vegetable, olive, etc,) in the bromeliad cups prevents larvae from growing there.  Concerned plant owners are encouraged to do the same.

Thanks, Marcy
