From the Rabbi: Something to Think About:

The Olympics in Rio

I don't want to say that the Olympics is exactly like life, but there are some real parallels. The winning and losing; the extent to which "the winners" go to cross the finish line the head of everyone else; the drama, the excitement, and of course, the defeats.

Winning and losing. How do we react to that? How do we measure that in our lives? How much does it matter? And most important - what does it mean to him or to lose?

Join us this Friday night as we examine the Olympics... Of life and at Rio.  See where our tradition "fall" on crossing the "finish line."

In the meantime - Enjoy your week!

Adult Ed:  What is the Talmud?

"Tzei Ul'mad - Come and Hear" is the formulation often beginning a Talmudic discussion.  It consists of  books of Jewish law.  Although, the answers to questions raised are not conclusively recorded, and in order to know what to do (or how to act) in a particular situation, we have to go further than the Talmud (into the Codes of Jewish Law - for ex., the Shulchan Aruch.)

The uniqueness of the Talmud (Hebrew for "study"), is that "Correct" answers emerge out of the process of argument that fills the Talmud and all the books written to explain it.
As the earliest rabbinic interpretation of the Bible, the Talmud is indispensable to understanding the laws and customs still practiced today. The Talmudic discussion and its conclusions provide us with the origins of our many laws and customs.

To study Talmud is to take one's part in the discourse of the generations
, to add one's own voice to the chorus of conversation and argument that has for nearly two millennia been the form and substance of Jewish law.
Join us and ADD YOUR VOICE to the "discourse of generations."

A renovated and greatly improved irrigation system has been installed on our grounds, courtesy of a grant secured by Jeff Tucker. Well done, Jeff!

Beth Or's response to Zika:

In response to the Zika outbreak, all of the plants, notably bromeliads, and any potential water catchers, have been sprayed with both mosquito insecticide and oil to kill mosquitos and larvae.  Placing oil (eg, vegetable, olive, etc,) in the bromeliad cups prevents larvae from growing there.  Concerned plant owners are encouraged to do the same.

Thanks, Marcy
