Sale Day Volunteers: please be here between 8:00 and 8:30 a.m.
 
YARD SALE UPDATE:  We had the most successful second yard sale ever!  More people attended than at the first sale!  And, many customers said they will be back next week.  They love us! 
Drum roll please!  We made $3000.  This brings our total to $9000, by far the best we have ever done.
I want to commend the hard working, dedicated crew who made this all possible - Annette, Amy, Kathy, Cathy T., Norma and Howard, Gail, Martha, Nancy, Andrea, Tom, Rowena, Bette, Morris, Rose, Jane, Karen, Phyllis, Diane B., Curt, Hope, Michael, Sara, Vicki, Diane P., Linda, Shep, Ellen, Mel, JJ - you were all fantastic, especially with the tremendous effort to pack up the Sanctuary items, and set up the outside and café areas.  I know everyone lost weight and slept well.
One more sale this Sunday from 9-12.  There will be a set-up Sat. AM at 10, which hopefully, will be very short.  There are no further donations.  After 12, all unsold items are free to Beth Or members.  Everything left will be given to various charities.  Please let Marcy or Kathy know if you can help with the final sale.

Oh, and one more thing: we really could use some more plastic carrier bags, like Publix or other store bags, and some larger bags for customers to carry out their purchases.

Please mark your calendars for Sunday afternoon, June 26 to celebrate Jewish Heritage Day at Marlins Park as we watch the Marlins take on the Chicago Cubs.  Game time is 1 pm.
 
We are booking a block of reserved seats and if participation warrants, we will charter a bus.
 
 
Please save the date for what should be a great afternoon.
 

Mango Season Approaches

They're getting bigger and juicier-looking by the week!

Get the mango recipes out and prepare for what we hope will be a bumper crop.  Mango challah, anyone?


Orchestra Miami's
Brundibár

...an opera for children by Czech-Jewish composer Hans Krása. Performed over 55 times in the Theresienstadt concentration camp and used by the Nazis to show how well the prisoners were being treated,
Brundibár became both a symbol of hope and resistance, as well as a Nazi propaganda tool. The opera will be performed by students from the Miami Art Studio at Zelda Glazer 6-12, and Orchestra Miami, conducted by Elaine Rinaldi and features Reid Suttles as Brundibár. The opera is directed by Michael Yawney with costume design by Lena Fernandez.
 
Brundibár is the story of two children, Pepicek and Annika, who go to town to get fresh milk for their sick mother. Having no money with which to buy the milk, they decide to sing in the town square to raise the money, but their efforts are thwarted by the evil organ grinder Brundibár. They are visited by a Sparrow, Cat and Dog, who tell the siblings that they will call all the village children, and together they will be strong and can defeat Brundibár. The children band together and defeat the bully, and Annika and Pepicek are able to get the money they need to buy the milk. The opera's symbolism of  the once helpless children overcoming the bully Brundibár was not lost on its audience, and yet not viewed as a threat by the Nazis. To the Jewish audience the evil organ grinder was Hitler and his defeat symbolized hope.
 
The opera is bookended by the story of Peter Ginz, written by Wendell Harrington and adapted by Michael Yawney. Based on his real-life experiences, Peter acts as a narrator and witness to the changes happening to his friends and family, and ultimately, himself.
 
There will be three performances held throughout Miami-Dade County:

Sunday June 5th, 4:00 PM at Temple Israel of Greater Miami (137 NE 19 Street, Miami, 33132).
 
Tickets are $10 for Kids ages 3-17 (under 3, free lap seating) and $15 for adults. Tickets and information can be found at www.OrchestraMiami.org

Climate Ground-Zero Rally
 
On behalf of the Coalition on the Environment and Jewish Life, an initiative of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs, you are invited to attend an upcoming event whose goals are integral to both the well-being of the greater Miami community and the Jewish principle of 
tikkun olam. Miami is already facing climate-driven sea level rise, and the consequences are most devastating in low-income communities who are often disempowered in decision-making processes.  
  
To draw attention to the crises of climate change and the needs of vulnerable communities, the Miami Climate Alliance is hosting a "Climate Ground Zero Rally: Demanding Equity in Miami's Climate Crisis." The event will take place at the Torch of Friendship on Tuesday, June 14th at 12 pm.
 
The Coalition on the Environment and Jewish Life is helping to coordinate the rally with secular and interfaith counterparts who will be in Miami for the concurrent US Climate Action Network Conference, as well as local organizations. Just a few committed diggers/planters/harvesters energize our Garden areas  - you have the infrastructure.  Cultivate your own plot at Beth Or and'ro help our next communal crop of bananas, papayas, other edibles, herbs and medicinals. 

 

Over 20 years ago Beth Orians wer Shomrei Adamah, Guardians of the Earth -- Keepers of the Garden of Eden, aspiring to the highest standards of earth ethics.  We can and will carefully select the veggies and herbs to maximize output, with proven techniques such as companion planting, insect control, etc.  With today's high prices, a garden is economically desirable.  Plus, it is a part of a healthy lifestyle, providing hands-on education and a social communal experience.
