Adult Education

Hello Beth Or,

Just a reminder that Part II of our Adult Education will be tomorrow evening, Tuesday, May 10th at 7:30 PM at the Temple (in the sanctuary).

Our topic concerns a discussion about how to help our loved ones, family, and/or friends when we/they are ill. Many of us have been on both sides and we can speak from experience. The Rabbi will lead the discussion of this and any other related questions.

Kitchen Wish List!

Our new kitchen is up and running, as those who have tasted the home-baked challahs at services will tell you.

Some folks have asked what they might contribute for the kitchen, so we've made a list of items that have occurred to us so far:

Mixing bowl set: preferably stainless with straight sides
Cake pans, round and square/rectangular
Muffin tins: regular size and mini-muffins
Whisks
Cooling racks
A few more nice dish towels

If you can contribute one or more of these items, we'll be very grateful, and you'll get to sample the results!

Yard Sale Schedule

YARD SALE DROP-OFF UPDATE:
We will not have access to the Sanctuary until May 15, so please do not bring in linens, kids' toys and clothing, and household goods until that date, as we have no place to store them. We are accepting: clothes, shoes, purses, electronics, appliances, office, books, lamps, and small health and fitness items.   As of Sunday, May 15, we will be accepting everything! Thanks for your patience.

Thanks to those who have donated. The donations have been tremendous! We especially love it when clothing is brought in on hangers, as it takes much less time to sort and place them. Also, please give your clothes a good look to make sure they are clean before bringing them.

Thanks to the wonderful volunteers who spent hours unloading bags. Oy! Our aching backs! We are so grateful for your time, enthusiasm and energy. We will be collecting this Saturday from 10-1, and really need a lot of folks to help. We will not be collecting on Mother's Day.

Notice of Annual Congregational Meeting

Please note your calendars that the Temple's Annual Meeting will be held at 6:30 P.M. on Friday, May 20, 2016 in the Temple sanctuary.

The Agenda of the Annual Meeting will include:

Report by the President

Appearances by Committee representatives to report to and answer questions of members.

A financial report to be given by our Treasurer or his designee.

Ratification and Installation of New Members at Large of the Board of Directors.

Red Tent Wrap-Up

The meeting was super fabulous. Linda led a wonderful discussion and everyone had something to say. The food was great and Janie's apartment is an inspiration.

We collected $72 for Share-a-simcha. We are adding $28 out of our account in order to send $100 for Ecuadorian relief.

The next book is The Nightingale by Kristen Hannah. It will be at April's house and the discussion will be led by Andrea.

Orchestra Miami's

Brundib�r

...an opera for children by Czech-Jewish composer Hans Kr�sa. Performed over 55 times in the Theresienstadt concentration camp and used by the Nazis to show how well the prisoners were being treated,
Brundib�r became both a symbol of hope and resistance, as well as a Nazi propaganda tool. The opera will be performed by students from the Miami Art Studio at Zelda Glazer 6-12, and Orchestra Miami, conducted by Elaine Rinaldi and features Reid Suttles as Brundib�r. The opera is directed by Michael Yawney with costume design by Lena Fernandez.

Brundib�r is the story of two children, Pepicek and Annika, who go to town to get fresh milk for their sick mother. Having no money with which to buy the milk, they decide to sing in the town square to raise the money, but their efforts are thwarted by the evil organ grinder Brundib�r. They are visited by a Sparrow, Cat and Dog, who tell the siblings that they will call all the village children, and together they will be strong and can defeat Brundib�r. The children band together and defeat the bully, and Annika and Pepicek are able to get the money they need to buy the milk. The opera's symbolism of the once helpless children overcoming the bully Brundib�r was not lost on its audience, and yet not viewed as a threat by the Nazis. To the Jewish audience the evil organ grinder was Hitler and his defeat symbolized hope.

The opera is bookended by the story of Peter Ginz, written by Wendell Harrington and adapted by Michael Yawney. Based on his real-life experiences, Peter acts as a narrator and witness to the changes happening to his friends and family, and ultimately, himself.

There will be three performances held throughout Miami-Dade County:

Sunday, May 22^nd, 4:00 PM at Temple Beth Torah Benny Rok Campus (20350 NE 26 Avenue, North Miami Beach, 33180)

Sunday June 5^th, 4:00 PM at Temple Israel of Greater Miami (137 NE 19 Street, Miami, 33132).

Tickets are $10 for Kids ages 3-17 (under 3, free lap seating) and $15 for adults. Tickets and information can be found at www.OrchestraMiami.org

Take Ourselves Out to the Ball Game!

Please mark your calendars for Sunday afternoon, June 26 to celebrate Jewish Heritage Day at Marlins Park as we watch the Marlins take on the Chicago Cubs. Game time is 1 pm.

We are booking a block of reserved seats and if participation warrants, we will charter a bus.

More information will be forthcoming in the next couple of weeks.

Plus, it is a part of a healthy lifestyle, providing hands-on education and a social communal experience.
