Ecuador Earthquake Relief

We've been asked to assist with relief efforts in the wake of the recent disastrous earthquakes in Ecuador.

The person to contact about donations is Martha Pacheco at the Liga Ecuatoriana de Florida
at 305-255-8771 or 305-798-4187.

She is the treasurer of the organization and can also be reached at marthapacheco10@aol.com

We are told that they do not need clothing at this time but are desperately asking for

  •  Rubbing alcohol
  •  Hydrogen peroxide
  •  Bandaids
  •  Baby formula
  •  Diapers (all sizes)

For this week, if you wish to bring items to Beth Or, please call to make sure someone will be here to receive them.  Pat Barron will take them to the collection location this weekend.

Adult Education is tonight!

Our April Adult Education with Rabbi Kram will be on Tuesday, April 26th at 7:30 PM at the Temple.

The topic will be "Death, dying, the reality of end of life issues, coping skills for
 terminal illnesses, etc."

This is an issue that affects all of us at some point in our lives.  Hopefully, we can learn something that will help us in this difficult process as we and our loved ones age.

yom hashoah candle Yom HaShoah Observance

Beth Or would like to send a delegation to this event.  If you would like to attend, please email or call the Temple office.  We'll see about arranging carpools, so please indicate if you're willing to take some passengers.

On Sunday, May 1 our community is commemorating Yom HaShoah at the Holocaust Memorial on Miami Beach at 6:30 PM.

Yom HaShoah...is a time to learn about the Holocaust, but that is something that can be done virtually any day.  What Yom HaShoah is meant to be is a day in which the Jewish people stand together united in remembrance of what happened to our ancestors, in memorial to their names, and in understanding that the Jewish people were singled out by evil because Judaism represents morality and the antithesis of Nazi ideology.  If we forget to stand together on this one day of the year, to take time to remember this greatest of our tragedies, we run the risk of not passing this message on to the next generations, and to fracturing the links that are supposed to bind one generation to the next.

Let us no longer simply say Never Forget, let's take active steps to fill the mandate of remembrance that our tradition demands.  Let us demonstrate to the survivors and ourselves that we promise as a community to ensure that the knowledge of this dark chapter is something that we all need to consider and reflect upon.  Just as the experience of the slavery in Egypt shaped our ethos as a people, so do the lessons of the Holocaust.

Thank you,

kid_boy_drumming.jpgKitchen Wish List!

Our new kitchen is up and running, as those who have tasted the home-baked challahs at services will tell you.

Some folks have asked what they might contribute for the kitchen, so we've made a list of items that have occurred to us so far:
  • Mixing bowl set: preferably stainless with straight sides
  • Hand-held mixer
  • 4-cup Pyrex measure
  • Cake pans, round and square/rectangular
  • Muffin tins: regular size and mini-muffins
  • Cookie sheets
  • Whisks
  • Cooling racks
  • A few more nice dish towels
If you can contribute one or more of these items, we'll be very grateful, and you'll get to sample the results!

More on the Yard Sale - Please read before bringing things to the sale!
BETH OR YARD SALE 2016
Hello Beth Orians!

It's YARD SALE time again. Last year's sale was a tremendous success, thanks to the hard work and commitment of our volunteers and the amazing donations.

Once again, we will be holding the bulk of the sale in our Temple building. We will be utilizing the entire facility, including the Sanctuary, for the sale. To minimize interference will our daily operations and with the Church, we need to organize, run, and dismantle the sale in record time.

We will begin collecting on April 30, set-up on May 21st, hold the first sale on May 22nd, the second sale on May 29th, and a third sale on June 5th. We hope to have all of the merchandise cleaned out within the following week.

We will have less space for storage, so we are streamlining our collections. We will no longer accept craft and holiday items (except Jewish items), old electronics, including box monitors, plastics of any type, magazines, text books, broken or incomplete toys, etc.
Please use good judgment in what you choose to donate; bring things that are clean and in good shape.

Also, it helps us tremendously if you pre-sort (eg, pack by category)and put clothing on hangers. Put everything but t-shirts, jeans and shorts on hangers. (We have hangers if you need them.)

A few words about donations. Last year we had terrific donations because many of your parents were downsizing. Other sources include: clothes that are too big (Yea Weight Watchers) or too small (ahem), kids going to college, growing grandchildren, moving, extended family and friends; redecorating, etc.

We can provide pick-up on a limited basis, if you have no way to get the items to the Temple.
The yard sale is one of our major fundraisers, and our biggest project involving the entire Beth Or community. It's lots of fun, but requires a lot of man- and woman-power. We need all the volunteers we can get. We look forward to seeing all of our fabulous 'regulars', but also hope many new members will get involved. It's a great way to bond with the community.

Our first challenge is on Saturday, April 29th, 10-1, and Sunday, May 1, 2-5, when we will be sorting and hanging clothing. We greatly need volunteers, as we are expecting a record amount of clothing. The more people we have, the quicker the job will be accomplished, and it is always FUN.

The next challenge is to have sorters the next two weekends, Saturday and Sunday from 10-12. Even if you can only help for 30 minutes, please come.

Please contact Kathy Fisler , Marcy Prince, or Rowena Wallach if you can help out, or if you have questions.

Let's make this year's sale another wonderful, successful experience.

FOR MOTHER'S DAY
While you drop off clothes for the yard sale, on Sunday May 1 from 2-5 pm, there will be an opportunity to purchase one-of-a-kind jewelry (necklace and earring sets) at very reasonable prices ($35-$55) and the Temple will get a donation with each purchase.  Or call Nancy directly at (786) 322-9605 and arrange a private showing of her work and the Temple will still get a donation.

Orchid  baskets will be available for Mother's Day on May 7th,  but by request only.  Anyone interested should contact me Marcy directly at mprince2@bellsouth.net.  If you wish, leave a message on the Temple voicemail, and it will be relayed to Marcy up to next Tuesday, May 3.

Notice of Annual Congregational Meeting

Please note your calendars that the Temple's Annual Meeting will be held at 6:30 P.M. on Friday, May 20, 2016 in the Temple sanctuary.

The Agenda of the Annual Meeting will include:

Report by the President

Appearances by Committee representatives to report to and answer questions of members.

A financial report to be given by our Treasurer or his designee.

Ratification and Installation of New Members at Large of the Board of Directors.

Beth Or's  ORGANIC  GARDEN
...continues to grow!
gardening-items.jpg

Beth Or's  ORGANIC  GARDEN needs green thumbs!

Let's put the 'Or' in 'Organic"

Just a few committed diggers/planters/harvesters energize our Garden areas  - you have the infrastructure.  Cultivate your own plot at Beth Or and'ro help our next communal crop of bananas, papayas, other edibles, herbs and medicinals.

Over 20 years ago Beth Orians wer Shomrei Adamah, Guardians of the Earth -- Keepers of the Garden of Eden, aspiring to the highest standards of earth ethics.  We can and will carefully select the veggies and herbs to maximize output, with proven techniques such as companion planting, insect control, etc.  With today's high prices, a garden is economically desirable.  Plus, it is a part of a healthy lifestyle, providing hands-on education and a social communal experience.

Kavanah~ Rabbi Mark:  "...to help build up our people, our institutions and our strength so that we continue to l'takein olam b'malchut Shaddai, 'repair the world under the kingdom of heaven.'  Let's get our hands deliciously "dirty" in this endeavor as we grow and sustain our beloved community."
