A Message from the Reconstructionist Rabbinical Association

THIS IS NOT A TIME FOR BUSINESS AS USUAL

March 17, 2016 - The leadership of the Jewish Reconstructionist movement urges the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) to rescind its invitation to Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump to speak at its annual gathering next week. At a minimum, we call on AIPAC to clearly affirm that Muslims are welcome in the United States and to condemn all racist statements. The AIPAC gathering, which is the largest annual gathering of American Jews, should not be a platform for espousing hateful rhetoric and racist policies.

We understand that AIPAC invited all presidential candidates and that an invitation is not an endorsement. However, when the values a candidate espouses are inimical to both the lessons of Jewish history and our Jewish ethical values, we must avoid any misunderstanding. This invitation confers an unwarranted legitimacy on Donald Trump's positions, which include the outright banning of all Muslims from entering the United States.

If any significant organization invited a candidate who explicitly called for Jews to be banned from entering the United States, the entire Jewish community would demand that invitation be rescinded. Trump's extreme anti-immigrant rhetoric is highly reminiscent of the rhetoric deployed against Jews who immigrated to the United States, and especially, against those who were turned away. The most oft-repeated statement in the Torah is, "Do not oppress the stranger, for you were strangers in Egypt." We know from history that once any group is targeted as a scapegoat, no group is safe.

We are commanded to intervene to stop the spilling of our neighbor's blood. We ask AIPAC conference organizers to make a clear distinction, in whatever way possible, between Trump's hate speech and the American Jewish community that AIPAC claims to represent. The majority of Americans-and this includes everyone, Jews and non-Jews alike-who care about Israel do not want to see Israel advocacy associated with the xenophobic rhetoric that Trump promotes. AIPAC's repudiation of that rhetoric will express our highest ethical values as Jews and as Americans.

kids_jumping_on_hill.jpg Volunteer Day at Chapman Partnership

The Social Action Committee is offering Beth Or members an opportunity to brighten the day for the children who reside at the Chapman Partnership for the Homeless.  On Thursday, March 24   from 1 - 3 PM  Beth Or members will visit the center in Homestead to involve about 50 elementary and middle school age children in activities and  games.   It will be their Spring Break from school and we want to give them an afternoon of fun and fellowship.

Here's how you can help:

Come to the event and assist with the activities or....

Come to the event and lead an activity for either elementary or middle school kids.   We need indoor activities (crafts/music/storytelling) and outdoor activities (Obstacle course/relay race/outdoor games). You will have plenty of volunteers to assist you or....

Suggest an activity - even if you can't make it to the event.

The children and the staff at Chapman are so appreciative of the kind contributions Beth Orians have made and it is truly an honor and a pleasure to spend time there.   Please consider sharing your time and your talents; you will be so glad you came!

Beth Or's  ORGANIC  GARDEN
...continues to grow!
gardening-items.jpg

Beth Or's  ORGANIC  GARDEN needs green thumbs!

Let's put the 'Or' in 'Organic"

Just a few committed diggers/planters/harvesters energize our Garden areas  - you have the infrastructure.  Cultivate your own plot at Beth Or and'ro help our next communal crop of bananas, papayas, other edibles, herbs and medicinals.

Over 20 years ago Beth Orians wer Shomrei Adamah, Guardians of the Earth -- Keepers of the Garden of Eden, aspiring to the highest standards of earth ethics.  We can and will carefully select the veggies and herbs to maximize output, with proven techniques such as companion planting, insect control, etc.  With today's high prices, a garden is economically desirable.  Plus, it is a part of a healthy lifestyle, providing hands-on education and a social communal experience.

Kavanah~ Rabbi Mark:  "...to help build up our people, our institutions and our strength so that we continue to l'takein olam b'malchut Shaddai, 'repair the world under the kingdom of heaven.'  Let's get our hands deliciously "dirty" in this endeavor as we grow and sustain our beloved community."
