Black History Tour with Dr. Marvin Dunn,  February 28, 2016

The Beth Or Social Action Committee will sponsor a Miami Black History bus tour to be given by Dr. Marvin Dunn on Sunday, February 28, 2016.

This tour will include stops in historic Coconut Grove, the heart of Miami's Bahamian community, Overtown, formerly called Colored Town, and the black entertainment center of the South in the 20's and 30's, and Liberty City, including the site of the catastrophic race riot of 1980.  We will travel by chartered bus and will leave from Beth Or at 10:00 a.m. and return to Beth Or at approximately 4:00 p.m.   The cost for the tour will be $25.00 per person.

We will stop at Bayside Marketplace for lunch on your own.  The cost of lunch is not included in the price of the tour.

Reservations will be accepted on a first paid/first served basis.  Seating is limited to 46.  The tour will initially be open to Beth Or members and their friends and family.  On February 1st, we will open the tour to the community.  Please be sure to make your paid reservations as soon as possible.

Dr. Dunn is donating his services.  If the tour turns a profit, it will be used to replenish the Beth Or fund to assist families of murdered children.

If you would like to participate, please send your check made out to Temple Beth Or by January 22, 2016, to Ellen Hanson, 10801 SW 124 St. Miami, FL  33176.

Tucker Memorial

Thanks to permission from renowned sculptor and architect Kenneth Treister
http://ufdc.ufl.edu/treister

the Tucker Memorial took its present shape almost twenty years ago.  The wooded beams, posts and elements were shaped by hand following Mr. Treister's installation at Temple Judea.  If you are not acquainted with his work think "creator of Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach."  Last week I had the pleasure of thanking his son Charles on behalf of The Tucker Family and Temple Beth Or
.

In appreciation and with deep respect I quote Treister "I created the memorial as a large environmental sculpture ... a series of outdoor spaces in which the visitor is led through a procession of visual, historical and emotional experiences with the hope that the totality of the visit will express, in some small way, the reality of the Holocaust. NEVER SHALL WE FORGET. The totality of the Holocaust cannot be created in stone and bronze ...but I had to try. The rich diversity of the European culture, now lost, cannot be expressed ... but I had to try. The murder of one and one half million children whose joys turned to sorrow suddenly on September 1, 1939, when World War 11 broke out, cannot be sculpted... But I had to try. Six million moments of death cannot be understood...

Beth Or's  ORGANIC  GARDEN
...continues to grow!
gardening-items.jpg

Beth Or's  ORGANIC  GARDEN needs green thumbs!

Let's put the 'Or' in 'Organic"

Just a few committed diggers/planters/harvesters energize our Garden areas  - you have the infrastructure.  Cultivate your own plot at Beth Or and'ro help our next communal crop of bananas, papayas, other edibles, herbs and medicinals.

Over 20 years ago Beth Orians wer Shomrei Adamah, Guardians of the Earth -- Keepers of the Garden of Eden, aspiring to the highest standards of earth ethics.  We can and will carefully select the veggies and herbs to maximize output, with proven techniques such as companion planting, insect control, etc.  With today's high prices, a garden is economically desirable.  Plus, it is a part of a healthy lifestyle, providing hands-on education and a social communal experience.

Kavanah~ Rabbi Mark:  "...to help build up our people, our institutions and our strength so that we continue to l'takein olam b'malchut Shaddai, 'repair the world under the kingdom of heaven.'  Let's get our hands deliciously "dirty" in this endeavor as we grow and sustain our beloved community."
