A message from Jeff Kaminsky, Ritual Chair:

A Service leader is needed for Friday, May 15th.  

Amy Lomaskin will lead services on May 1, with the Oneg Shabbat that evening sponsored by Bonnie Aberson.  We'd love to see as many Beth Or and Red Tent members as possible that evening!

Please seriously consider helping out and know that practice makes it much more easy and enjoyable.    


Note from the office:  several versions of a guideline for leading a service are available -- just follow along, and you'll be fine!

And Speaking (again) about Shabbat Services....

Oneg Shabbat dates are available for you to honor or remember someone special or a date that's meaningful to you and your family.  Just call or email the Temple office and we'll compare notes.

There are a number of families who have paid for an Oneg Shabbat but have not decided on a date.  You've been sent an email in the last couple of weeks, and you'll probably be contacted by phone, if you haven't been already.

If you've paid, you have first dibs on any given available date -- consider birthdays, anniversaries, Yahrzeits, graduations,  whatever's coming up in your family's calendar!

Please note, we will begin assigning dates in the next couple of weeks if we don't get responses from those families who have been contacted!


Board and EC Meetings Rescheduled
 

 

Because of schedule conflicts for a number of Board Members and the Rabbi, the Executive Committee Meeting and Board of Directors Meeting will be postponed until Wednesday, April 22.  The EC will meet at 7:15 and the Board will meet at 8:00.

 

A full agenda is anticipated as we prepare for the Annual Meeting on May 8.  Please make every effort to attend.


 

NOTICE OF ANNUAL MEETING

           

Please note your calendars that the Temple's Annual Meeting will be held at 7:00 P.M. on Friday, May 8, 2015 in the Temple sanctuary.  

 

The agenda of the Annual Meeting will include:

 

1. Appearances by Committee Representatives to report and answer questions of members

 

2. A financial report to be given by our Treasurer or his designee

 

3. Election of the President, First Vice President and Members at Large of the Board of Directors. 

 

 

 

Leadership Development  

 

Message from Dr. Michael Newman and Shep Faber:

 

As co-chairs of the Leadership Development committee, we will be submitting a slate of candidates for election as President, First Vice-President, and Members at Large of the Board of Directors at our Annual Meeting this year on Friday, May 8.

 

Members at Large of the Board are expected to attend our monthly Board meetings, and, among other duties, help develop the Temple's policies and programs, approve our operating budget and set annual dues and fees. A Member at Large may also be assigned as a chair or co-chair of a committee or individual project.

 

If you'd like to serve, but believe that you may not have enough experience or need to know more about the position, please get in touch with Shep Faber (305-856-1895) and we'll get you up to speed.

 

Written applications and nominations for the position of Board Member at Large will be accepted until April 24, 2015 . Submit them to yogishep@mac.com.

BETH OR YARD SALE 2015

Hello Beth Orians! YES! It's YARD SALE time again. Last year's sale was a tremendous success, thanks to the hard work and commitment of our volunteers and the amazing donations. We made almost $9000. We'd love to duplicate this effort!

 

Once again, we will be holding the bulk of the sale in our Temple building. We will be utilizing the entire facility, including the Sanctuary, for the sale. To minimize interference will our daily operations, we need to organize, run, and dismantle the sale in record time.

 

Our collection/sale schedule will be as follows:

 

Sat. April 25, 10-1 clothing only!

Sun. April 26, 10-1 clothing only!

Sat. May 2, 10-1

Sun. May 3, 10-1

Sat. May 9, 10-1

Sun. May 10, 10-1

Sat. May 16  Set-Up 9-til we finish!

    'Food Among the Schmatas' will be served!

Sun. May 17,  First Sale, 8-2

Sat. May 23, Set-Up, 10-12

Sun. May 24, Second Sale, 9-1

Sat. May 30, Set-Up, 10-12

Sun. May 31, Final Sale, 9-12

 

Please use good judgment in what you choose to donate; bring things that are clean and in good shape.

 

Also, it helps us tremendously if you pre-sort and put clothing on hangers. Put everything but t-shirts, jeans and shorts on hangers. (We have hangers if you need them.)

 

We cannot accept old electronics, plastics of any type, magazines, text books, broken or incomplete toys, etc. We cannot accept large furniture, as we have no way to transport or store the items. If you have large furniture items, we can show a picture on the website.

 

Last year we had terrific donations, often from your friends and families. Please spread the word on Facebook or other social media that we accept donations and that tax forms are available.  We have flyers for distribution.

The yard sale is one of our major fundraisers, and our biggest project involving the entire Beth Or community. It's lots of fun, but requires a lot of man- and woman-power. We need all the volunteers we can get. We look forward to seeing all of our fabulous 'regulars', but also hope many new members will get involved. It's a great way to bond with the community.

 

We need sorters during all of the drop-off times. The more helpers we have, the faster the job gets done. And remember, helpers get first pick of the merchandise!

 

Even if you can only help for 30 minutes, please come.

Let's make this year's sale another wonderful, successful experience.

 

Bridge to the Future and Membership Dues Followup

The Bridge to the Future followup team will be communicating with TBO members in the near future.  We're looking to touch base with members whose pledges have open balances, members whose pledges have been completed, and members who have never made a BTF pledge or might be interested in continuing a completed pledge.

We're also working on a similar process to catch up with folks who have outstanding dues and who are not on a scheduled payment plan.

Before we contact anyone -- and the contacts will probably be by mail initially -- we will review each member's history to make sure we have correct information to work with. 

Film Presentation -- with a purpose! 

 

Wednesday, April 29, at 7:30 p.m. 

 

Temple Beth Or will host a viewing of the documentary film "The Black Miami" followed by a discussion of current social issues in our community with Dr. Marvin Dunn, noted historian, educator and community activist. The one-hour film takes you on a journey through history highlighting the important role of blacks in the creation of Miami and Florida. The film revisits the past to understand how race lines in South Florida were created and eventually transcended.  

 

The event is open to the public. Admission is free but donations of any amount will be collected and used to assist local families with burial expenses for children who have been murdered.   Recognizing the hardship on poor families to bury children who were victims of violence, Temple Beth Or wishes to assist poor families with final expenses.

 

 
Temple Beth Or is located at 11715 S.W. 87 Ave. in Miami.  Parking is available in the open area adjacent to the Temple building.

Let's put the 'Or' in 'Organic"

I'm not able to run a Garden Club but a few committed diggers/planters/harvesters could

bring our Garden areas to life - you have the infrastructure; we can do something to start using it.

 

Will this become The Opportunity to cultivate your own plot at Beth Or or help our next communal crops of:  bananas, papayas, other edibles, herbs and medicianals!?

 

We're also submitting a grant proposal to improve the irrigation for many edibles on campus!

 

Story:  We are Shomrei Adamah, Guardians of the Earth or Keepers of the Garden of Eden.  To start off we will be practical and do whatever works- but we aspire to the highest standards of earth ethics summarized by Organic/Veganic Gardening. We will carefully select the veggies and herbs to maximize output, balanced cultivation, companion planting, insect control etc. With today's high prices for quality veggies and herbs, a garden is economically desirable.  Plus it is part of a healthy lifestyle, good education, and a social communal experience.  All those with green (or any color) thumbs are welcome to cultivate with us.

 

Kavanah~ Rabbi Mark:  "...to help build up our people, our institutions and our strength so that we continue to l'takein olam b'malchut Shaddai, 'repair the world under the kingdom of heaven.'  Let's get our hands deliciously "dirty" in this endeavor as we grow and sustain our beloved community."
