creased-star-david.jpg A Message from Rabbi Mark Kram

Dear Friends,

It is with a great deal of sadness and sorrow that I write these words to you. The murders of three young Israeli teens leaves an indelible mark on each of our souls. We can only imagine the pain the parents feel, and the distress each Israeli feels as days went by until their bodies were found not far from Jerusalem, in the West Bank.

And now, with the death of a young Palestinian, the cause of which is yet to be determined, also fills us with horror if it was associated with the deaths of the three young Israeli teens in any way.

Will there be an escalation in tension and actions? What will be the price each side pays? When will the acrimony, hostility and animosity end?

In the meantime, we at Beth Or offer our condolences to the families of the innocents, and our prayers to all sides and to others who have a stake in seeking peace for all and strengthening the hands of people of goodwill in this conflict, and everywhere they may live.

May we all see peace soon, in our days,

Rabbi Mark S. Kram

sepia_stacked_hands.jpg The Committee for Community Service

Dear members,

The first Beth Or Day at the Chapman Partnership for the Homeless was a big success. Beth Or volunteers involved the children who live at the shelter with arts and crafts, an outdoor obstacle course and cupcake decorating activities. The children were simply a joy with the older ones helping the tots and all participating and enjoying the day while expressing gratitude every step of the way.

Our next event there will be on Saturday, July 19th from 1 -3 PM. We are calling this one, Fun and Games! Contact Andrea Loring ( andrealor@bellsouth.net) if you would like to come and get acquainted with our new partner agency.

At the end of the summer or in the Fall, we would like to plan another Beth Or Day with a theme based around the talents of our members. Are you a musician? Can you orchestrate a drum circle or a sing-a-long? Can you do magic tricks? Can you coach a field day? Please let Andrea Loring know how you can contribute and we will schedule that activity around the members who come forward. The children will make you so glad you shared your talent - come to the July event and you'll see.

This year, we would like to support the Beth Or/Chapman partnership also by directing all of our donation drives for their benefit. Currently, the collection box is for school supplies and new socks and underwear. Later, we will conduct donation drives for other requested items. We hope that by focusing all of our charitable donations and volunteer efforts to our partner organization, Beth Or will make a big difference in the lives of people who really need and appreciate our help.

Let Andrea know if you can come on July 19 and if you have a talent to share on another date. Please donate generously.

Sincerely,

The Committee for Community Service

From Rhoni Tannebaum, for the Oneg Shabbat Committee: cornucopia-flowers.jpg

I would like to invite you to join the Oneg Committee for TBO. The good part of this committee is that  WE NEVER HAVE MEETINGS! All of our tasks will be conducted by phone and you will only need to occasionally come to TBO to set up and break down the onegs. All event onegs will have Marina present to help, unless otherwise specified by the person putting on the oneg.

Kathy will send me a list of members and the date they have chosen to pay for the oneg. They have the choice of providing food or we can shop for them.

If you are available, you can e mail me and I will schedule you for the oneg. We can also work in pairs, if someone has to leave early another can clean up.

I am trying to make this as easy as possible on everyone, especially Kathy who has been providing the onegs for us, and rarely asks for help. This has the potential to be

a great, fun committee and even bring up the attendance at services!

book Red Tent Women's Reading Group

Red Tent meets this Sunday at 1:00. We are reading In the Land of Invisible Women, by Dr. Qanta A. Ahmed.

Marcy Prince is leading and hosting at the Temple. Please RSVP to her at mprince@miamidade.gov

Hopefully by Sunday the book schedule for next year will be available and we will start scheduling the hostesses.  Thank you for everyone who has agreed to lead the discussions.

Weight Watchers Continues at Beth Or
Weight Watchers continues its meeting series on Thursday mornings at 10:00 a.m. at Beth Or.

New members should arrive at about 9:45 and enter by the back door at the top of the ramp.

For more information, please contact Ilien Hechtman at ilienh@aol.com

Chit Chat

Chit Chat meets on Wednesday mornings at 10:00 at the Temple.

We've picked up several interesting articles from reputable sources -- BBC News and the New York Times among them -- and we're ready to launch into topics of local, national and international interest with a distinctly Jewish approach.  We talk about cultural, legal, educational, social, political, religious and secular subjects, with a text usually from the media to start us off.

There's always room for more, so please don't hesitate.  If you're available, so are we.
If you want to be included on the Chit Chat email list, please contact Mike Leslie at hebrewnatl@aol.com.

Helping out Holocaust Survivors

This appeal comes from Vicki Brail, who was contacted by a Bonnie Schwartzman, Director of the Kosher Food Bank, Jewish Community Services of South Florida.

Many JCS clients are in need of towels and linens. They do not mind if they are very gently used and in good condition.

If you have some extra towels or sheets and are cleaning out your closets this summer, please feel free to drop them at the JCS Kosher Food bank, Bet Shira Congregation or contact Eileen Far at 305-804-3771 and we will distribute them to these seniors in need.

House, Garden and Grounds News   gardening-items.jpg

H&G follows the 'Permaculture' trend towards Edible landscapes. After creating a Decorative island at the north end of our sidewalk we installed BANANA ISLAND behind the Dougie Garden with 6 different banana varieties for the congregation.  Next is PAPAYA ISLAND, under construction in the NE corner behind the huge Magen David bench.

Our old Irrigation System is being fixed- one sprinkler at a time.  More asphalt patches for potholes and breaks.  Ramp and exterior Stairways due for repainting with Skidproof terra cotta paint.  Watch transformation of Oneg Room Exit Door, about to get a 'makeover!'  PS. White ingress-egress driveway arrows garnered positive feedback- thanks!

Mango Season is here!

Mangos are falling out of the sky!

The very ripe fruit is dropping from the trees, and your loyal TWABO editor is racing the critters to get to the mangos before any little teeth or beaks can take bites out of them!

Mangos will be in a basket on one of the Oneg Room tables for the duration of the season.  Enjoy!

Congratulations!

....to the 2014 Adult Bat Mitzvah Class!  We heard the details of the extraordinary Shabbat celebration from several people, an we were sorry we were not there to honor you.  Your accomplishment was not an easy task, which undoubtedly required months of hard work and dedication.  It is our understanding that each of you conveyed a beautiful and meaningful mesage regarding the significance of your Torah portion.  No doubt this is a milestone and event you will not soon forget.

We'd also like to add our thanks and gratitude to yours to Shirley, Jeff, and Mark for their commitment, dedication, and hard work to making this possible.

With a heartfelt Mazel Tov, from Ossie and Harry!

Cooper, a chihuahua mix, needs a foster home for 3 months while his Mom is visiting family in Nevada.

Cooper is an older dog who is extremely low-maintenance and just needs companionship.  We weren't able to include the photo here, but it can be forwarded to anyone who's interested.  He looks like a real sweetie!

Any medical needs would be taken care of.  If there is anyone in the Temple who would like to foster him, please have them contact Amy Lomaskin at 305-253-1768 or amylo@aol.com.
