Beth Or Committee for Community Service

"Everybody can be great...because anybody can serve.  You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve.  You only need a heart full of grace.  A soul generated by love."  Martin Luther King, Jr.

The Beth Or Committee for Community Service engaged in a comprehensive search for a community service project where Beth Or members can make a difference to people in need.  We conducted site visits and phone interviews to find a project where there is "something for everyone" to do and where Beth Orians can share our skills, talents and good fortunes with others while establishing a visible presence and a reputation for practicing our spirituality beyond the temple walls.

We chose the Chapman Partnership at Homestead, a large program that provides shelter to homeless men, women and children and endeavors to empower them to build a positive future by providing the resources and assistance needed for growth and independence.  (www.chapmanpartnership.org) We envision a long-term relationship between Beth Or and Chapman.  Here are just some of the ways we can get involved:

+ Providing enriching activities for the residents - especially the children during the summer.
+ Mentoring/tutoring a child or adult
+ Assisting with food preparation, closet organizing, etc.
+ Organizing drives for needed items ( School Supply drive is starting on July 1st.  Please donate to the box in the Oneg room or send a cash donation to Adrienne Hochman who will shop for supplies for you.)

Our first on-site activity will be for the children (about 40 of them) on the morning of Monday, June 23( 9:30 AM - 11:30 AM). We will provide arts and crafts and movement activities for the children.  We will bring refreshments and maybe organize a kickball game after the event.  If you would like to join the committee in this activity, please send me and Email and a scanned copy of your photo ID which is required by Chapman.

The next children's activity will be on Saturday, July 19 from 1-3 PM. Volunteers will be needed for this and for food preparation and serving also on that day from 9:30 - 1 PM.  You can reserve a volunteer spot for this too by sending me an Email and your ID.

The volunteer possibilities are endless. Please think about what skills you would like to share with the many babies, children, men or women at Chapman and send us your ideas!

notebooks-pen-sm.jpg School Supplies Collection

In addition to the school supplies for children who reside at the Chapman Partnership for the Homeless,  we are also collecting magazines for men.  (A special request from Chapman.)  They have plenty of reading material for women.  They asked that we not include free magazine inserts or outdated news magazines.  A box is set up in the Oneg room.  All donations to Chapman are greatly appreciated by the residents and the staff.

Magazines can be placed in the same box as the school supplies.

Weight Watchers Continues at Beth Or
Weight Watchers continues its meeting series on Thursday mornings at 10:00 a.m. at Beth Or.

New members should arrive at about 9:45 and enter by the back door at the top of the ramp.  Please note that there will be no meeting on Thursday, July 3.

For more information, please contact Ilien Hechtman at ilienh@aol.com

Chit Chat

Chit Chat meets on Wednesday mornings at 10:00 at the Temple.

We've picked up several interesting articles from reputable sources -- BBC News and the New York Times among them -- and we're ready to launch into topics of local, national and international interest with a distinctly Jewish approach.  We talk about cultural, legal, educational, social, political, religious and secular subjects, with a text usually from the media to start us off.

Now that we are back at the Temple, there's always room for one more, so please don't hesitate.  If you're available, so are we.
If you want to be included on the Chit Chat email list, please contact Mike Leslie at hebrewnatl@aol.com.

House, Garden and Grounds News   gardening-items.jpg

H&G joins county-wide efforts to eradicate the invasive holly tree, an aggressive intruder into SE Florida's habitat which produces countless seedlings.

Over the past three years TBO has cut down the established trees and worked with our NW neighbor to do the same.  Recently we did a

'campus-wide sweep' uprooting many plants in various stages of growth.

Notice our safety improvements including new traffic arrows and lines along Galloway, and some asphalt repairs.

Who's got room for Cooper?

Cooper, a chihuahua mix, needs a foster home for 3 months while his Mom is visiting family in Nevada.

Cooper is an older dog who is extremely low-maintenance and just needs companionship.  We weren't able to include the photo here, but it can be forwarded to anyone who's interested.  He looks like a real sweetie!

Any medical needs would be taken care of.  If there is anyone in the Temple who would like to foster him, please have them contact Amy Lomaskin at 305-253-1768 or amylo@aol.com.
