NOTICE OF ANNUAL MEETING AND REQUEST
FOR NOMINATIONS

 

 

            Please note your calendar that the Temple's annual membership meeting will be convened in the Sanctuary at 7:00 P.M. on Friday May 9. The agenda of the meeting will include appearances by committee representatives to report their activities and answer questions of members and a financial report.

 

Our current officers and directors all have another year in their terms of office. However there are several vacancies on the Board of Directors for Members at Large. Members at Large attend monthly Board meetings, and, among other things, develop the Temple's policies and programs, approve our operating budget, set annual dues and fees and approve the contract with our Rabbi.  A Member at Large may also be assigned as a chair or co-chair of a committee or individual project.

 

As chair of the Leadership Development committee, I will be submitting a slate of candidates for election as Members at Large. I'll will be accepting written applications and nominations for the position until  May 5. Submit them to me at yogishep@mac.com.

Weight Watchers at Beth Or!

Weight Watchers meets at Beth Or each Thursday at 10:00 a.m. through June 5, 2014. 

 

New members should arrive by 9:45 to sign up and plan to stay about 20 minutes after the class to get their program introduction.

Chit Chat meets on Wednesday mornings at 10:00 at the Temple. 

We've picked up several interesting articles from reputable sources -- BBC News and the New York Times among them -- and we're ready to launch into topics of local, national and international interest with a distinctly Jewish approach.  We talk about cultural, legal, educational, social, political, religious and secular subjects, with a text usually from the media to start us off.
 
Now that we are back at the Temple, there's always room for one more, so please don't hesitate.  If you're available, so are we.

Many, many thanks to those who fetched, carried, drove, schlepped, sorted, constructed, and otherwise helped get this year's Yard Sale prep off to one of the most well-organized start-up days ever!  Thanks as well to Amy Lomaskin and Mel Tenen and to Vicki and Michael Henry  for allowing us to use garage space and warehouse space.      
Sorters Extraordinaire -- you know who you are, and we need you.  Sorting, cleaning of some items, and pricing can be done during the Drop-Off times as well as when the building is open for office hours, generally Tuesday, 10-2, Wednesday, pretty much all day from 10 a.m., Thursday 9-1, and Friday 10-2.

You haven't helped sort and arrange items before?  We'll get you started.  Just show up!

Are you experienced in graphic design?  Do you know a graphic designer who might be willing to do a little pro bono work for the Temple? 

Glenn Patron is working on an updated brochure and would like to have a professional take a look at it prior to final approval and production.  If you are willing or know someone who might be, please contact the Temple office.  The information will be forwarded to Glenn. 

Garden and Grounds News

 

New: BANANA ISLAND, cultivating 5 species of edible bananas beside the Dougie Garden.

 

 

Jeff Tucker wants our members to know that we are stepping up the care and cultivation of all edibles on the campus in hopes of producing enough fruit to  make a significant donation to a deserving organization. Jeff will keep members posted on this project as the growing season progresses.

 

 

Notice we'll have lot's of mulch and compost to feed the transplanted young trees to insure a healthy crop of delicious fruit in the coming years.

A STATEMENT FROM THE
GREATER MIAMI JEWISH FEDERATION REGARDING ANTI-SEMITIC
FLYERS IN UKRAINE 

April 17, 2014

As has been widely reported in the media, flyers have been distributed in Donetsk, Ukraine, requiring Jews to "register with the Nationalities Commissioner and pay $50 or lose their citizenship and face deportation."

Federation's partner agency, NCSJ: Advocates on Behalf of Jews in Russia, Ukraine, the Baltic States & Eurasia, has ascertained that the flyers have originated neither from the Ukrainian government nor from Donetsk's pro-Russian separatists led by Denis Pushilin, whose name appeared on the flyers. The distribution of such flyers by three masked individuals was seemingly an attempt to provoke unrest among the Jewish community by street-level vigilantes.

Clearly, any form of anti-Semitism is reprehensible, regardless of its source, and we condemn these blatant attacks on the Jewish community.

While monitoring this situation, our Federation, through our overseas partners, will continue to assist our fellow Jews in the Ukraine as they weather the devastating effects of the ongoing political crisis. Through the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, we are providing essential humanitarian assistance to thousands of impoverished Jewish elderly and at-risk children and their families. In addition, our other overseas partner, The Jewish Agency for Israel, continues to provide information, support and transportation to the increasing numbers who are choosing to make aliyah to Israel. All of this is possible because of the significant infrastructure of services in place every day, funded by our Annual Federation/UJA Campaign.

As we are in the midst of Passover, we wish all our people a meaningful and joyful holiday. We pray for an end to the frightening instability and political, social and economic upheaval being experienced by the Jewish communities of Ukraine.

Transitioning from High School to College: Tools for Jewish Students

 

Making the transition from High School to College for Jewish students has never been easier. Hillel has an amazing new resource where graduating seniors can self-identify and their information will be shared with their new college/university's Hillel!  Click here to visit 

 

The Hillel will automatically be notified of anyone who fills out this form, and that Hillel will reach out to everyone who contacts them through this form. This is a great way for incoming freshmen to get to know Jewish life on campus before they ever get there, and it is also a huge help to the many Hillels  (including ours here at University of Miami) whose host universities do not currently share information about Jewish students.
