Chit Chat meets on Wednesday mornings at 10:00 at the Temple. 

We've picked up several interesting articles from reputable sources -- BBC News and the New York Times among them -- and we're ready to launch into topics of local, national and international interest with a distinctly Jewish approach.  We talk about cultural, legal, educational, social, political, religious and secular subjects, with a text usually from the media to start us off.
 
Now that we are back at the Temple, there's always room for one more, so please don't hesitate.  If you're available, so are we.

Positive Psychology: Some Practical Steps Toward Happiness

"Black Miami in the Twentieth Century" and "The Beast in Florida: A History of Anti-Black Violence."
Dr. Dunn has written and directed several documentary films, is a newspaper contributor,
and scholar-in-residence at Camillus House.

Back to the 70's, a Bat Mitzvah, and Purim all in one!

Ninety-Six-One, international professional musicians under the direction of Nicholas Bright, will entertain us with disco favorites in conjunction with our Erev Shabbat service.

Remember
Love Train, Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now, The Prayer, Everybody Rejoice, I'm So Excited, and what might be the Beth Or anthem, We Are  Family???

Alexia Frydman and her family have graciously agreed to indulge us in the party atmosphere on the evening before her Bat Mitzvah celebration, and will provide the Oneg Shabbat that evening.

As if that's not enough, it's Purim on that Sunday, an occasion to dig our your best shiny disco-Esther duds and those platform shoes!  Costumes are welcome!

There will be a limited number of items offered at a silent auction during the honorary event for Michael Henry, the evening of March 15.
Featured so far are: 

 

  •  A Day of Sailing, escorted by Captain Glenn Patron on his 50 foot sailboat. Cocktails and lunch included for up to 4 people.
  • "Up close and personal" Tickets to the Dolphin game of your choice, ( 50 yard line, Row  1,  plus Premium Parking), donated by Scott Miller
  • A room of oak flooring, donated by the Henry's

Super Sunday is March 9! 

The Greater Miami Jewish Federation's largest annual community-wide fundraising phonathon has traditionally been a day of giving, as volunteer callers reach out to members of Miami's Jewish community to ask for support of the Annual Federation/UJA Campaign. This year's event, chaired by theHalberstein Family on
Sunday, March 9, will provide additional meaning for participants through hands-on volunteer activities coordinated by Federation's Jewish Volunteer Center as part of Good Deeds Day.

 

Created by philanthropist Shari Arison, Good Deeds Day is an annual global celebration, where hundreds of thousands of people worldwide join together to do good deeds for the benefit of others and the planet.

More than 1,000 volunteers are expected to converge on Federation headquarters from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. to make phone calls, help package 30,000 macaroni and cheese meals, and to embark on hands-on volunteer activities that include delivering food packages, visiting the elderly, helping the homeless, sprucing up local neighborhoods and much more. The purpose of all of this: to expand the circles of good in the world.

Super Sunday is not just a day-long phonathon; it is also a marathon of good deeds that build Jewish community, help those in need and strengthen Jewish life in Miami, in Israel and worldwide 365 days a year through Federation programs and services.

Cynthia Stein and Keith Ginsburg, Miami Beach and South Dade Vice Chairs, respectively, are also helping to ensure Super Sunday includes participants from all parts of Miami-Dade County.  Shana Lewinger Russo is Chair of the Jewish Volunteer Center.

New Be'Chol Lashon Taglit-Birthrigh Israel Trip

Join trip leaders Joshua Rothstein and Lindsay Newman for this new trip for young adults 18-26 who have an interest in exploring the racial and ethnic diversity of the Jewish people.

Scheduled for the end of June/beginning of July, this trip is for all who value a diverse vision of the Jewish people.  This is also an exciting opportunity for those with racial, ethnic and culturally diverse backgrounds to come together with trip "leaders of color."

Operation Shower baby-items.jpg

Operation Shower is a nonprofit organization that throws baby showers for soon-to-be moms of deployed or deceased service personnel.  They are collecting items to be included in the shower baskets.   The particular items they need right now are wipes (unscented), rattles, an board books.

Please either drop your items in the "shower" box in the Oneg Room or send me a check made out to Operation  Shower, or contact the Temple office for instructions to send a check to Vicki Brail so that she can purchase items on your behalf. 

The main thrust of this program is through February 28, but Vicki will be collecting items throughout the year.  Unfortunately, there are always "almost moms" left behind due to war.

PEARL (Providing Education And Resources for Leadership)
is a distance-learning program designed to provide meaningful information and strategies for congregational leaders, members, clergy, educators and staff. Expert speakers partner with movement professional staff and lay leaders to help strengthen congregations and
havurot, foster leadership, deepen Jewish spiritual life and continue 
tikkun olam/social justice work.

March 12:  Join Rabbis Jane Rachel Litman and Henry Shreibman as they discuss the fundamental concepts of Reconstructionist thought, including peoplehood, egalitarianism, democracy, pluralism, culture, theology, and the move away from "chosen-ness." Learn why and how Reconstructionist ideas were profoundly different from those of other denominations in the 20th century. Discover why the overwhelming majority of non-Orthodox (and many Orthodox) diaspora Jews identify with Reconstructionist principles for vibrant Jewish communal life. This session is the first in a two- part series. The second session, with Rabbi Deborah Waxman, will explore how Reconstructionist Judaism is uniquely poised to respond to the challenges of the 21st century.

 

Miami-Dade County Parks Issues Call for Seasonal Job Applicants

 

Accepting Applications February 24 - March 23 for Summer Positions

(MIAMI, February 24, 2014) -

The Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department is issuing its annual call for seasonal job applicants to fill the summer staffing needs of its summer programming and activities, traditionally the busiest time of year when families and kids on summer vacation frequent Miami-Dade County's parks for its summer camps, pools and beaches.
Applications will only be accepted February 24 - March 23, 2014, for a variety of summer jobs at Miami-Dade County Parks, including pool managers, lifeguards, park service aides, and recreation leaders.  
 

 

 

Applicants must be at least 17 years old.  Those applying must first complete a Miami-Dade County Employment Application online at

www.miamidade.gov/jobs 

and then contact the Miami-Dade County park location where they wish to work.

Those applying for pool manager or lifeguard positions are required to submit proof of current certification in CPR, first aid, lifeguard and water-safety instruction provided by the Red Cross, YMCA or other nationally recognized aquatic training program.  Training is available for those who apply early.
