Chit Chat at Beth Or

Chit Chat meets on Wednesday mornings at 10:00 at the Temple.

We've picked up several interesting articles from reputable sources -- BBC News and the New York Times among them -- and we're ready to launch into topics of local, national and international interest with a distinctly Jewish approach.  We talk about cultural, legal, educational, social, political, religious and secular subjects, with a text usually from the media to start us off.

Now that we are back at the Temple, there's always room for one more, so please don't hesitate.  If you're available, so are we.
If you want to be included on the Chit Chat email list, please contact Mike Leslie at hebrewnatl@aol.com.

Positive Psychology: Some Practical Steps Toward Happiness

Presented by Dr. Nancy Kirsner

Reality and Research has now taught us that there are certain "Happiness Habits" that affect the quality of how we feel, think, and lead our lives.  Learn how to raise your Positivity Quotient, bringing meaning, purpose and joy to your life.  How happy are your willing to be?

Sessions continue on Tuesdays at Beth Or, 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.  This class is open to Beth Or members and guests, with a non-member fee of $10.00 per session.

Please contact the office at 305-235-1419 or email bethortemple@aol.com to register.

piano_keyboard.jpg February Love Songs Sing-Along

Sharon Abramson, Beth Or member, talented pianist and former music store owner is putting together music for Feb 23rd's Singalong, #2 Sunday, 2-3:30pm.    The theme is Love Songs for February - My Funny Valentine & More.   If you have a favorite love song and are planning to attend,  please send your request  to Jeff Kaminsky, kaminskyjeff-bethor@yahoo.com and if we have the music we may be able to do it.     At our first Sing Along we had a lot of fun with 15 people attending.   Of course, your RSVP is always appreciated if you are coming.

Honorary Event Update

A Musical Tribute to Michael Henry

Get those RSVP's in!

Now, here's the best part!

Michael Henry has generously offered to write and perform a song to acknowledge, roast, celebrate TBO members at his event in March.  This song will not be for the faint of heart!  Michael will liberally take advantage of professional license to bring humor to his song, which will include all people who wish to participate.  If you wish to be a part of the history and humor for this event and make a donation to  TBO at the same time, please contact Kathy at the Temple office, 305-235-1419.

Only a couple of spaces remain in Michael's song, so speak up soon!

GMJF Volunteer Opportunity

We wanted to give you a "heads-up" since you are among those who enjoy hands-on volunteering projects.

On Sunday, March 9 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., the Greater Miami Jewish Federation will host Super Sunday and Good Deeds Day.

This meaningful day will combine our community's largest phonathon with hands-on volunteer experiences. In addition to making phone calls to raise funds for the Annual Federation/UJA Campaign, we will offer volunteer opportunities at homeless shelters, hospitals, senior living facilities, the JCS Kosher Food Bank and a cleanup in the Jewish section of the Miami Cemetery. We also will be packaging 30,000 individual macaroni and cheese meals!

As a past participant in our hands-on volunteering programs, we ask you to consider taking on a leadership role in Good Deeds Day. For example, you can serve as a captain of one of the activities or help us outreach in the community. You have already shown your commitment to helping others, why not take it to the next level? To find out more about taking on a leadership role, call or email me, Laura Guren Rodriguez, at 786-866-8680 or lrodriguez@gmjf.org

Please mark your calendar and keep your eyes open for an email with further details and an opportunity to RSVP.

reaching_hands.jpg GMJF Jewish Population Study

Every decade, a comprehensive study is conducted of
Miami's
Jewish community to provide a shapshot of who we are, where we are, and where we are headed.  This information helps to create a roadmap for local planners, agencies, congregations and communal organizations to serve changing Jewish needs and
interests for years to come.

Your participation is critical to the success of this effort.  If you receive a phone call for the 2014 Miami Jewish Population Study, please take the time to answer the questions and make sure your voice is heard.  Calls will begin on January 19 and continue for approximately six weeks.

All responses are completely confidential no personally identifiable details are linked to the answers, and no financial solicitationss will be made.

For more information, visit
www.jewishmiami.org/populationstudy.

You'll find a list of FAQ's that will explain the process and purpose.

Operation Shower baby-items.jpg

Operation Shower is a nonprofit organization that throws baby showers for soon-to-be moms of deployed or deceased service personnel.  They are collecting items to be included in the shower baskets.   The particular items they need right now are wipes (unscented), rattles, an board books.

Please either drop your items in the "shower" box in the Oneg Room or send me a check made out to Operation  Shower, or contact the Temple office for instructions to send a check to Vicki Brail so that she can purchase items on your behalf.

The main thrust of this program is through February 28, but Vicki will be collecting items throughout the year.  Unfortunately, there are always "almost moms" left behind due to war.

Thank you for your support.  Questions will be forwarded to Vicki.
