Chit Chat at Beth Or

Chit Chat meets on Wednesday mornings at 10:00 at the Temple.

We've picked up several interesting articles from reputable sources -- BBC News and the New York Times among them -- and we're ready to launch into topics of local, national and international interest with a distinctly Jewish approach.  We talk about cultural, legal, educational, social, political, religious and secular subjects, with a text usually from the media to start us off.

Now that we are back at the Temple, there's always room for one more, so please don't hesitate.  If you're available, so are we.
If you want to be included on the Chit Chat email list, please contact Mike Leslie at hebrewnatl@aol.com.

Honorary Event Update

The committee will meet on Thursday, January 16, at 7:00 p.m., at Rhoni Tannebaum's home to discuss further plans for the event.

Now, here's the best part!

Michael Henry has generously offered to write and perform a song to acknowledge/roast,celebrate TBO members at his event in March.  This song will not be for the faint of heart!  Michael will liberally take advantage of professional license to bring humor to his song, which will include all people who wish to participate.  If you wish to be a part of the history and humor for this event and make a donation to  TBO at the same time, please contact Kathy at the Temple office, 305-235-1419.

Inclusion in this one-of-a-kind song is $50 per person.  All donations must be received no later than February 15th!

Positive Psychology: Some Practical Steps Toward Happiness

Introducing a new six week course to be given by Dr. Nancy Kirsner

Sessions continue on Tuesdays at Beth Or, 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m., January 21, 2014.  This class is open to Beth Or members and guests, with a non-member fee of $10.00 per session.

Please contact the office at 305-235-1419 or email bethortemple@aol.com to register.

CAJE Adult Jewish Learning Launches New Melton Class, "Jewish Mysticism and Kabbalah: Secret Knowledge In Judiasm "

WHAT: CAJE's Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning launches class on Jewish Mysticism and Kabbalah: Secret Knowledge In Judaism

WHEN: Classes begin February 4th & 5th, 2014

WHERE: Temple Judea, Tuesday mornings, 10:00-11:30am and Temple Sinai, Wednesday afternoons, 12:-00-1:30-pm

REGISTER/INFO

With gratitude and affection from her students and colleagues in Miami, this brand new Scholar's curriculum is dedicated in honor of Rabbi Efrat Zarren-Zohar, Director of CAJE'S Department of Adult Jewish Learning and Growth and the Miami Melton School from it's inception in 1997 to the present.

Red strings, Madonna, Demi Moore, scanning Hebrew letters-this is what many people associate with Kabbalah and Jewish mysticism. But you want to get a deeper, more accurate and academically reliable understanding of what for centuries has been esoteric knowledge available only to a chosen few. This course will give you the framework to understand the development of Jewish mysticism, the texts that have been so central to that tradition, and clarify what Kabbalah is and isn't. While grounded in scholarship, each class will include components that will address the deepest mysteries of human existence and many of life's eternal and universal questions.

reaching_hands.jpg GMJF Jewish Population Study

Every decade, a comprehensive study is conducted of
Miami's
Jewish community to provide a shapshot of who we are, where we are, and where we are headed.  This information helps to create a roadmap for local planners, agencies, congregations and communal organizations to serve changing Jewish needs and
interests for years to come.

Your participation is critical to the success of this effort.  If you receive a phone call for the 2014 Miami Jewish Population Study, please take the time to answer the questions and make sure your voice is heard.  Calls will begin on January 19 and continue for approximately six weeks.

All responses are completely confidential no personally identifiable details are linked to the answers, and no financial solicitationss will be made.

For more information, visit
www.jewishmiami.org/populationstudy.

You'll find a list of FAQ's that will explain the process and purpose.

Operation Shower baby-items.jpg

Operation Shower is a nonprofit organization that throws baby showers for soon-to-be moms of deployed or deceased service personnel.  They are collecting items to be included in the shower baskets.   The particular items they need right now are wipes (unscented), rattles, an board books.

Please either drop your items in the "shower" box in the Oneg Room or send me a check made out to Operation  Shower, or contact the Temple office for instructions to send a check to Vicki Brail so that she can purchase items on your behalf.

The main thrust of this program is through February 28, but Vicki will be collecting items throughout the year.  Unfortunately, there are always "almost moms" left behind due to war.

Thank you for your support.  Questions will be forwarded to Vicki.
