Shabbat Shalom and Tu B'Shevat!
shabbat shalom
At our Tu B'Shevat seder, celebrating the "New Year for Trees," we invite  you to share with us your connection to the holiday and the planet.  Please bring a short poem, story, piece of art, a fruit or plant, a song that speaks sweetly and succinctly of your relationship to the Earth and our natural surroundings.

We'll start at 7:30 and continue into the Shabbat Service, followed by a light Oneg.

Progressive Dinner Wrap-Up

Many, many thanks to Annette Katz and Irene Elliott for the masterful organization that went into this year's Progressive Dinner, to Ilien and Keith Hechtman for opening their home to us for both appetizers and desserts, and to the dinner hosts:  Marti and Tom Gammon and Ossie and Harry Hanauer, Mindy and Mark Kram, Gail and Elliott  Manning, Andrea Loring and Marvin Dunn and Ellen and John Hanson, Ellen Siegel, April and Scott Miller, and Bette, Morris and Rose Spector.

Now...who'd like some of those yummy recipes?  Just email or call the Temple with your requests, and they will be forwarded to the appropriate chefs.

Thank you, Thank you!

Chit Chat at Beth Or

Chit Chat meets on Wednesday mornings at 10:00 at the Temple.

We've picked up several interesting articles from reputable sources -- BBC News and the New York Times among them -- and we're ready to launch into topics of local, national and international interest with a distinctly Jewish approach.  We talk about cultural, legal, educational, social, political, religious and secular subjects, with a text usually from the media to start us off.

Now that we are back at the Temple, there's always room for one more, so please don't hesitate.  If you're available, so are we.
If you want to be included on the Chit Chat email list, please contact Mike Leslie at hebrewnatl@aol.com.

Programming Meeting

Thursday, January 16, at 7:30 p.m. at TBO.

The Programming/Calendar Group needs your ideas to fill out the rest of winter and spring, including Purim and Passover, to take us through June.  Let's continue to build on our successes and experience and learn from our efforts and plan our holidays, special social events, adult education seminars/classes, coffeehouses, movies, cooking classes and retreats/day trips, etc.

Please bring your dreams and imagination.  Also w need members to take ownership of these events --doers along with dreamers.  And know that ownership doesn't necessarily mean running the entire event; you can recruit and/or delegate to make something happen.  If you cannot attend but have ideas or items to bring to the meeting, please contact Jeff Kaminsky as soon as possible at 305-663-1218 or kaminskyjeff-bethor@yahoo.com

Honorary Event Committee Update and Announcement

The committee will meet on Thursday, January 16, at 7:00 p.m., at Rhoni Tannebaum's home to discuss further plans for the event.

Now, here's the best part!

Michael Henry has generously offered to write and perform a song to acknowledge/roast,celebrate TBO members at his event in March.  This song will not be for the faint of heart!  Michael will liberally take advantage of professional license to bring humor to his song, which will include all people who wish to participate.  If you wish to be a part of the history and humor for this event and make a donation to  TBO at the same time, please contact Kathy at the Temple office, 305-235-1419.

Inclusion in this one-of-a-kind song is $50 per person.  All donations must be received no later than February 15th!

Bibliodrama this Saturday
   at 10:00 a.m. torah study

We'll surprise you with our selection of text, so come prepared to step into the sandals of Biblical story characters, get into their heads, and find out just how like us they were!

Scott and Michelle Dalziel Return to the Lighthouse Cafe

Don't miss this great Duo!

Saturday, January 18, 7:30 p.m.

Scott & Michelle are two of my favorite people and their music is exceptional!  They both write music and have beautiful voices and rich harmonies. They have a wonderful stage presence and last time they played at the Lighthouse everyone went WILD for them! They both play guitar (very well), and Michelle also plays a Djembe with brushes - and you'll think there's a full drum kit there.

Folk Alley's artist of the month in 2008
The fresh and soulful sounds of Scott and Michelle's voices, combined with their high energy performance, memorable and meaningful songwriting, and instrumental finnesse, put them in a category all their own. Said to have more sound than two people should be allowed, acoustic Rock or Folk genres could very well hold them but not completely. They dip down into R&B, Jazz, roots, and Blues showing the versatility of this duo. Since their Kerrville Folk Festival and South West Regional Folk Alliance Debut's in 2004, they are gaining recognition and respect from not only audiences, but from venue owners

You can check them out at www.dalziel.net - but just listen to enough to get you to pick up the phone and make your reservation!

So please join us for this great show and check out the coming performances because we have some great music coming  to the Lighthouse Cafe ~  I hope you'll join us!

Contact the Temple office at 305-235-1419 or email bethortemple@aol.com for reservations.

Folks with reservations will be seated prior to walk-ins, so please give us a call or an email to save your spot!

In and For Our Community

reaching_hands.jpg GMJF Jewish Population Study

Every decade, a comprehensive study is conducted of
Miami's
Jewish community to provide a shapshot of who we are, where we are, and where we are headed.  This information helps to create a roadmap for local planners, agencies, congregations and communal organizations to serve changing Jewish needs and
interests for years to come.

Your participation is critical to the success of this effort.  If you receive a phone call for the 2014 Miami Jewish Population Study, please take the time to answer the questions and make sure your voice is heard.  Calls will begin on January 19 and continue for approximately six weeks.

All responses are completely confidential no personally identifiable details are linked to the answers, and no financial solicitationss will be made.

For more information, visit
www.jewishmiami.org/populationstudy.

You'll find a list of FAQ's that will explain the process and purpose.

Operation Shower baby-items.jpg

Operation Shower is a nonprofit organization that throws baby showers for soon-to-be moms of deployed or deceased service personnel.  They are collecting items to be included in the shower baskets.   The particular items they need right now are wipes (unscented), rattles, an board books.

Please either drop your items in the "shower" box in the Oneg Room or send me a check made out to Operation  Shower, or contact the Temple office for instructions to send a check to Vicki Brail so that she can purchase items on your behalf.

The main thrust of this program is through February 28, but Vicki will be collecting items throughout the year.  Unfortunately, there are always "almost moms" left behind due to war.

Thank you for your support.  Questions will be forwarded to Vicki.
