Chit Chat will NOT meet Wednesday, November 27, as many of the regulars will be preparing for Thanksgivukkah.

We'll resume our meetings on Wednesday, December 4 at 10:00 a.m

This discussion group addresses topics of local, national and international interest with a distinctly Jewish approach.  We talk about cultural, legal, educational, social, political, religious and secular subjects, with a text usually from the media to start us off.

Now that we are back at the Temple, there's always room for one more, so please don't hesitate.  If you're available, so are we.
If you want to be included on the Chit Chat email list, please contact Mike Leslie at hebrewnatl@aol.com.

Message from Rabbi Kram

As I spoke about Friday night, regardless of what the new Iranian President Hassan Rouhani says, he is not in charge.  Here is what those in charge said on Friday, the same day I shared with you my thoughts on Iran:

From the JTA, the Global News Service of the Jewish People

Khamenei anti-Israel tirade draws U.S. condemnation

November 22, 2013 1:44pm

WASHINGTON (JTA) - An anti-Israel speech by Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei drew condemnations from U.S. officials.

In his Wednesday speech, Khamenei said that Israel "will not endure" and appeared to refer to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as an "unclean rabid dog."

Samantha Power, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, on Thursday called the remarks "abhorrent." Also on Thursday, Secretary of State John Kerry told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that Khamenei's remarks were "inflammatory" and "the last thing we need" while talks are underway in Geneva.

In his speech, Khamenei appeared to respond to Netanyahu's claim that Iran poses a threat not just to Israel but to the entire international community.

"Sometimes this is heard from the enemies of Iran, such as from the sinister mouth of the unclean rabid dog of the region in the Zionist regime," Khamenei said, according to Iran Pulse, an English language monitor of the Iranian press.

Khamenei slammed the French for adopting the toughest stand in major powers' negotiations with Iran on rolling back the Iranian nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief.

"The support of the miserable Zionist regime to which not even an animal's name can be assigned will be a great dishonor to the Europeans. Of course, the French must themselves find a remedy for it," he said. "The Zionist regime is an imposed regime, and whatever comes out of force is not durable and this regime will not endure."

Netanyahu, meeting in Moscow with Russian Jewish community leaders, said that the remarks underscored the true nature of the Iranian regime.

"This is the real Iran! We are not confused," Netanyahu said. "They must not have nuclear weapons. And I promise you that they will not have nuclear weapons."

In his speech, Khamenei also warned Iranian negotiators in Geneva not to cross "red lines," although he did not spell these out.

Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif has suggested in recent days that Iran may retreat from its demand that the international community recognize an Iranian right to enrich uranium.

Progressive Dinner

italain-food-items.jpg

Hello everyone:

It's that time of year again when we start planning for Temple Beth Or's Progressive Dinner.  The date for the 2013 Progressive Dinner is, Saturday, January 11, 2014.  We are looking for volunteers to host the entree portion of the evening, and Irene and I were wondering if you would be willing to serve as a host house.

Our 2014 Progressive Dinner will be extra special. We will be beginning and ending our evening in the same place, thanks to the generosity of Ilien and Keith Hechtman. We will initially gather at the Hechtman home for appetizers to get the evening off to a great start.

Once the guests leave the Hechtmans, they will head to their assigned host house.  Hosts are responsible to serve a salad, main dish with some side dishes, bread, and something to drink.  Temple Beth Or provides each host house with two bottles of wine -- one red and one white.

You and your guests eat and talk for a couple of hours and leave to return back the Hechtman home by 10 p.m. for the dessert portion of the night.  It's a great way to rekindle old friendships and make new ones.

Irene and I do all the behind the scenes arrangement of assigning folks to the houses and so forth.  As an added benefit, guest hosts are not required to pay the fee for the dinner.

It's great fun and we hope you'll consider hosting.

Please let us know as soon as possible whether you'll be able to be a host. Feel free to respond by email to annette075@aol.com or you can call either Irene or me if you have any questions.  We look forward to hearing from you. Please contact one of us as soon as possible so we can properly plan the dinner.

Best,

Annette & Irene

Irene's home number is 305-251-4336
