Chit Chat at Beth Or

Chit Chat will meet as usual on Wednesday morning at 10:00 a.m.

This discussion group addresses topics of local, national and international interest with a distinctly Jewish approach.  We talk about cultural, legal, educational, social, political, religious and secular subjects, with a text usually from the media to start us off.

Now that we are back at the Temple, there's always room for one more, so please don't hesitate.  If you're available, so are we.
If you want to be included on the Chit Chat email list, please contact Mike Leslie at hebrewnatl@aol.com.

Announcing a New Beth Or Program - Jewish Play Reading!!

Thursday November 14th, 7:30 pm
Teacher and actress Janet Raskin is starting a new program of Jewish play reading for thespians and novices.

Interested participants should call the Temple and let us know you plan to attend.  Just leave a voicemail at 305-235-1419, please or email at bethortemple@aol.com

This is a participatory event where everyone who comes will get one part to play from a collection of short plays.  Participants will get a chance to read through and then do their reading for the group.  The first selection will be "Oy!" by Richard Orloff; for a description please see below.

Janet Raskin earned her MFA in Acting at the University of Central Florida.  She has taught acting for stage and camera at Miami-Dade College North and Valencia College in Orlando.  Her credits include Emily Dickinson in "The Belle of Amherst" performed at Temple Beth Or in April and October of this year.  She has also played Yente in "Fiddler on the Roof" and Amanda in "The Glass Menagerie."  In 2013, Janet earned a certificate of completion from the Michael Chekhov Assocation in psycho-physical principles of acting.   And for those of you not aware, Janet is Carol Kaminsky's (twin) sister.

OY!
is a collection of 13 short comedies, each illustrating the meaning of a Yiddish word -- including the untold stories of Eve and Adam, Einstein's demanding mother, the divorce trial of God and the human, the use of unkosher food as an aphrodisiac, and three men in a steam room who communicate using only the word "oy." Appealing to audiences of all backgrounds,
OY! is a tribute to the absurdity and comedy of being human.

torah-scroll-sm.jpg Global Day of Jewish Learning -- Beth Or Style!

Sunday, November 24, 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

The Global Day of Jewish Learning brings Jewish people together once a year to celebrate our shared Jewish text through community based learning.

The guiding values of the day are: fostering Jewish unity, empowering individuals through increased Jewish knowledge, and creating meaningful shared experiences.

This year's theme is Creating Together: Jewish Approaches to Creativity and Collaboration, which is a wonderful opportunity to tie Jewish text learning with the Thanksgiving holiday.

Most synagogues will celebrate the Day of Learning on November 17, but a calendar conflict necessitates our Day of Learning to be moved to the following Sunday, November 24.

Mazagines for the Troops Overseas

Thank you so much to those folks who have brought stacks of magazines to be sent to troops overseas!

We'll continue the collection through the end of this coming weekend -- Bazaar-goers: this is a great opportunity to bring your magazines in and leave them for the collection.

Two donation boxes are in the Oneg room waiting for you to bring your magazines.  A wide variety of subject matter will be welcome -- nice ones, please! -- and don't forget something for the women on the front lines.

Also, a big thanks to the Red Tent Women's Reading Group for donating this month's Share-a-Simcha money to cover the shipping charges.

Temple Wish List

Thanks a million, folks!

A Friend of Beth Or, who wishes to remain anonymous, has made it possible for us to re-open our BJ's Wholesale Club membership.

Thanks also to Glenn Patron, who thoughtfully provided a set of ink cartridges for the trusty printer in the office and a container of shredder oil that will doubtless last us the next ten year!

Outdoor Furniture Available

Amy Lomaskin and Mel Tenen have a very nice set of outdoor patio furniture available:

The table is 39" wide by 61" long, with a glass top.  Completing the set are six chairs, oversized with white metal frames and white web-strapping, aqua trim.

We weren't able to include a photo here, but one is available on request.   Anyone wishing to "adopt" this set would have to be able to have it picked up.

Please call Amy at 305-253-1768.
Do you have an old "box style" TV that works?

Looking for an excuse to replace it?  We've got one, ready-made.

Marcy Prince can take old, working TV's with the following specifications: TV's must have outlets for DVD/VHS/game hook-up; no larger than 27".

Marcy is  also seeking DVD and VHS players and cable boxes.

These would be made available to women who need assistance in getting a roof over their heads and don't have the means to purchase luxury items.
