Chit Chat at Beth Or

The Chit Chatters are back at Beth Or this Wednesday at 10:00 a.m.

This discussion group addresses topics of local, national and international interest with a distinctly Jewish approach.  We talk about cultural, legal, educational, social, political, religious and secular subjects, with a text usually from the media to start us off.

Now that we are back at the Temple, there's always room for one more, so please don't hesitate.  If you're available, so are we.
If you want to be included on the Chit Chat email list, please contact Mike Leslie at hebrewnatl@aol.com.

Thank you, Thank you!

School Supplies Drive

It's that time of year again--we will be collecting school supplies for children in need.  There is a box in the oneg room where you can leave
your donations.  Supplies will be donated to Children's Home Society.

Bette and Morris Spector will deliver all donated items to the CHS before the start of the school year.

Socks and Underwear Drive

And while we're at it, we're also collecting new socks and underwear for children in all grade levels.  The collection will continue through August 9th.

Jane Weinstock is coordinating that drive and will take all donated items to the folks at the Chapman Partnership.

Red Tent Women's Reading Group
Thank you to Norma Salz's and Edie Doktorczyk for hosting the July Red Tent Meeting at Norma's home, and to  Greta Larrison-Malkin for leading the discussion of The Invisible Bridge and also for making two Hungarian dishes for us to enjoy.

The next Red Tent will be at Irene Elliott's home, and we'll be discussing How Evan Broke His Head and Other Secrets by Garth Stein.

Beth Or Website Update...

Stay tuned for an announcement of a workshop about Facebook and using Beth Or's Facebook Fan page to its fullest to promote who we are as a Jewish Jewel, instead of the best kept secret in South Dade.

A message from the Temple's Web Maven, Natalie Kaminsky:

Hello everyone! I am excited to be Beth Or's Web Maven and one of our Facebook facilitators. I look forward to keeping Beth Or's cyberspace presence fresh and engaging.

I can't do it without you, though. If you snap a good picture at a temple gathering, send it to me so I can post it on Facebook. Write and send me a short blurb about a meaningful Beth Or experience (perhaps three or four sentences) that may be shared online. That link about a local Jewish happening? Send it over! My email is kaminskynat@gmail.com

Making Beth Or shine one post at a time,

Natalie

In and For Our Community

The Young Lion of Judah Program

...a unique B'nai Mitzvah project for students becoming a Bar or Bat Mitzvah.

In addition to choosing individual volunteer opportunities, the Jewish Volunteer Center is partnering with the Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach, a committee of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation to pair students with Holocaust survivors who never had the chance to become B'nai Mitzvah. Students will spend time with a Holocaust survivor while working toward completing 10 hours of community service.

Projects include learning about the Holocaust, touring the Holocaust Memorial with survivors, and beautifying and planting at the Memorial.

For 2013-2014, the program begins on Sunday, October 13, 2013 and ends on Sunday, February 23, 2014. Participants will meet with their peers for three programs on Holocaust education. In addition, students will volunteer on their own schedule, visiting with their survivor partner and building a new friendship.

Students are asked to honor their survivor partner during their Bar or Bat Mitzvah service and make a gift of $180 to the Annual Greater Miami Jewish Federation/UJA Campaign. They will receive a certificate of completion and their Young Lion of Judah jewelry gift - a silver bracelet for girls and a silver talit clip for boys.

IMPORTANT PROGRAM DATES:
October 13, 2013, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach, Orientation and Meeting with Survivors
December 8, 2013, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach, Holocaust Education Program
February 23, 2014, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach, Closing Mitzvah Project

For an application or for more ways to become a Young Lion of Judah, please contact Jewish Volunteer Center Director Laura Guren Rodriguez at 786.866.8680 or Volunteer@jewishmiami.org
