D'var Torah - Independence Week - July 5, 2013

Rabbi Mark Kram, Temple Beth Or, Miami, FL

I want to talk about my friend Dalia Ziada. Especially on the weekend when we celebrate the independence of our country.

As we celebrate the 237th year of independence of our country, Dalia is trying to encourage democracy in her country, Egypt.

I met Dalia at the recent conference in Washington DC. We were both attending a dinner hosted by the Cypriot ambassador to the US. She just happened to sit down beside me and we were able to chat throughout the evening.

I learned about her family and her brothers - one married - and her father who died not too many years ago.

I also learned about her struggle for democracy in Egypt. You see, because Dalia is a women's rights and human rights advocate in a country which is trying ever so painfully to give birth to democracy.

This week, I couldn't help but think about her not just because she's in the news, but because we celebrate Independence Day this Thursday.

How difficult and how challenging it must've been for our ancestors to give birth to our own independence - which we often celebrate without thought about the process it took to get "here."

But I also learned Dalia was a speaker at the AJC conference I was attending. I was surprised because here was a young Muslim woman in her early 30s, modestly dressed and appropriately covered as Muslim women are. But what you don't see is that she is a tireless and courageous fighter for freedom and democracy and human rights.

Come to hear Dalia's story on Friday night for services and I'll share with you the bravery of one young woman who says that the Arab spring has not turned into the Arab winter. But that democracy still springs forth.

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Mark

Planning Meeting and Brunch

Dear Members:

Here's an open invitation to our next Calendar Meeting & Brunch this Sunday morning, July 7th, 10:30 am at the Temple. Last meeting we did great work and got through to November (Hanukah/Thanksgiving).   We need this follow-up meeting for the remainder of the year

Please come and map out together the rest of the year's programs:  holidays, special social events, adult education seminars/classes, coffeehouses, movies, cooking classes and retreats/day trips, etc. and then we'll supplement and fine tune the whole year. A big job that requires your input and enthusiasm.

Some agenda items have already rolled in: setting a date for Adult Bat Mitzvah.

Regardless, please send me your items and concerns for the meeting directly.

I hope you can be I hope you can be there.
BShalom & Thanks,
Jeff Kaminsky

Please remember that the paved parking area, including the Handicapped Permit space, will have been resurfaced on Saturday and may not be ready to drive or walk on by Sunday.
Please park in the open, unpaved lot on the side of the building.

Chit Chat at Beth Or

The Chit Chatters are back at Beth Or this Wednesday at 10:00 a.m.

This discussion group addresses topics of local, national and international interest with a distinctly Jewish approach.  We talk about cultural, legal, educational, social, political, religious and secular subjects, with a text usually from the media to start us off.

Now that we are back at the Temple, there's always room for one more, so please don't hesitate.  If you're available, so are we.
If you want to be included on the Chit Chat email list, please contact Mike Leslie at hebrewnatl@aol.com.

Thank you, thank you!

Office Schedule Notes

The Beth Or office will be closed Wednesday,

July 3 and will reopen Friday, July 5.

Executive Committee and Board of Directors

The next EC and Board meeting will be held on Wednesday, July 10 at 8pm (EC at 7:15), please prepare your agenda items, reports and issues to be discussed at this meeting and email them to Dr. Michael Newman, drmike@drmichaelnewman.com,

Basketball/parking area paving

This work will take place starting early Saturday morning, July 6, and will continue throughout the day.  Because the blacktop coating has to cure after it is installed, that parking area, which includes our Handicapped Permit parking, will be unavailable for both Saturday and Sunday.

Please use the unpaved area to the north of the building for that time.  We apologize for the temporary inconvenience, but the improvement will be worth it!

Stand With Us

StandWithUs is an international, non-profit organization. Founded in 2001, StandWithUs is dedicated to informing the public about Israel and to combating the extremism and anti-Semitism that often distorts the issues.

We work by supporting people around the world who want to stand up for Israel and educate their own local campuses and communities. We believe that knowledge of the facts will correct common prejudices about the Arab-Israeli conflict, and will promote discussions and policies that can help promote peace in the Middle East.

Through print materials, speakers, programs, conferences, missions to Israel, campaigns, focus on social media and internet resources, we ensure that the story of Israel's achievements and ongoing challenges is told on campuses and in communities, the media, libraries, and churches around the world. Based in Los Angeles, StandWithUs has fifteen offices across the U.S., and in Israel, Paris and the UK.

A message from the Temple's Web Maven, Natalie Kaminsky:

Hello everyone! I am excited to be Beth Or's Web Maven and one of our Facebook facilitators. I look forward to keeping Beth Or's cyberspace presence fresh and engaging.

I can't do it without you, though. If you snap a good picture at a temple gathering, send it to me so I can post it on Facebook. Write and send me a short blurb about a meaningful Beth Or experience (perhaps three or four sentences) that may be shared online. That link about a local Jewish happening? Send it over! My email is kaminskynat@gmail.com

In and For Our Community

The Young Lion of Judah Program

...a unique B'nai Mitzvah project for students becoming a Bar or Bat Mitzvah.

In addition to choosing individual volunteer opportunities, the Jewish Volunteer Center is partnering with the Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach, a committee of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation to pair students with Holocaust survivors who never had the chance to become B'nai Mitzvah. Students will spend time with a Holocaust survivor while working toward completing 10 hours of community service.

Projects include learning about the Holocaust, touring the Holocaust Memorial with survivors, and beautifying and planting at the Memorial.

For 2013-2014, the program begins on Sunday, October 13, 2013 and ends on Sunday, February 23, 2014. Participants will meet with their peers for three programs on Holocaust education. In addition, students will volunteer on their own schedule, visiting with their survivor partner and building a new friendship.

Students are asked to honor their survivor partner during their Bar or Bat Mitzvah service and make a gift of $180 to the Annual Greater Miami Jewish Federation/UJA Campaign. They will receive a certificate of completion and their Young Lion of Judah jewelry gift - a silver bracelet for girls and a silver talit clip for boys.

IMPORTANT PROGRAM DATES:
October 13, 2013, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach, Orientation and Meeting with Survivors
December 8, 2013, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach, Holocaust Education Program
February 23, 2014, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach, Closing Mitzvah Project

For an application or for more ways to become a Young Lion of Judah, please contact Jewish Volunteer Center Director Laura Guren Rodriguez at 786.866.8680 or Volunteer@jewishmiami.org

Space is limited to 25 participants.
