Pesach Sheni
It's unusual to give a holiday a second chance. But for Passover even on the Jewish calendar there exists an opportunity for a second chance it's called Pesach Sheni.
if someone was not able to observe Passover for a few select reasons, 30 days following Passover by Jewish law they are given a second opportunity.
How does this happen? Why is this holiday in particular pointed out as the one holiday a year for which the second opportunity is offered? Why is there a second opportunity? What is so important about Passover that the rabbis decided that there should be another chance to observe the holiday?
On the surface it seems fairly obvious. This is the holiday that is most observed by more Jews than any other - probably all of the others put together. After all it commemorates leaving Egypt, moving from slavery to freedom, but much, much more.
It's a holiday observed at home, with family and friends. It's a holiday observed around the dining room table or the kitchen table. It's a holiday filled with special memorable foods from each family's personal history. And it's a holiday recognizing that there are those in need among us and that we are not able to enjoy the Passover until all have been invited to join us at the table.
And why is it on the calendar. It's set the date exactly 30 days after the 14th of Nissan, on the 14th of Iyyar.
Perhaps twofold: 1. To remind us of we have a second chance to do something that's important - just as we have a second chance at the High Holy days to put our lives back on track. Number two perhaps to remind us of the important obligation and that is to bring historically the offering that we were unable to bring to the temple 30 days later. So what is so important about that offering? What are the important things about Passover or spring or the first month of the new year (yes, the first month of the new cycle of the year is Nissan, the month of Passover).
Friday night at services, let's together defined the importance and the reason for Pesach Sheni. Join me this Shabbat and let's discover or uncover the old and new meaning for this important date on the calendar.
Shabbat shalom,
Mark

Chit Chat is back at Beth Or!!!
The Chit Chatters are back at Beth Or this Wednesday at 10:00 a.m.
This discussion group will address topics of local, national and international interest with a distinctly Jewish approach. We talk about cultural, legal, educational, social, political, religious and secular subjects, with a text usually from the media to start us off.
As we're moving back to the Temple, there's always room for one more, so please don't hesitate. If you're available, so are we.
If you want to be included on the Chit Chat email list, please contact Mike Leslie at hebrewnatl@aol.com.

No full time job openings- just help our new Adminsitration, with or without a big job-title!
For many leadership roles just One Hour Per Week would suffice - assuming a quota of fellow congregants step
up to manage TBO's community, 2013-14.
Don't:
A) quit your day job
B) crowd your busy schedule
Do:
A) commit to add your voice
B) help our Incoming Leadership serve Beth Or's traditions and preserve its future!

Garden and Grounds
Beth Or's ORGANIC GARDEN continues to grow!
Let's put the 'Or' in 'Organic"
Wilfredo Candelaria, a local Master Organic Gardener kindly offers free advice and consultation to Beth Orians wanting to get their hands dirty and fill their plate with home-grown produce! Call Wilfredo (786) 234-7520.
Jeff is almost done with complete wood replacement around raised beds. Inside surfaces coated with Linseed Oil, not paint or laquer = avoid harsh chemical contamination!
Laura Sutton, local Organic Gardener/Farmer is helping us enhance the soil, suppress weeds, upgrade the garden infrastructure, mulch and fertilize the 5 immature banana trees. The remaining beds will soon be 'Fallowed' and 'Top Dressed' with hay, ready for planting next week or in September.
Laura advises:
Vegetables to plant in South Florida in March: cantaloupes, mustard, onions, okra, pole beans, radish, snap beans, summer squash, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, watermelon
Vegetables to plant in South Florida in April: lima beans, pole beans, snap beans, southern peas, summer squash
Four Raised Bed Custodians (so far):
1-Jane Weinstock 3' x 8'
2-Mark Rosenbloom 4' x 4'
3-Pat Barron 3' x 8'
4- Linda Steinberg-Lewis 3' x 8'
So, do you want to operate one of the remaining beds? There's no charge - most supplies freely available (or BYO.) Depending on the level of participation we may have a workshop or training session this season >>>
>>>OFFER: CONTACT JEFF TUCKER JMTucker007@gmail.com TO CLAIM A RAISED BED To Grow Your Own!
Do's and Don'ts:
- Don't step on a bed (your weight compresses the soil, reducing 'friability')
- If you don't know what to do-ASK
- Learn as much as you can about organic-veganic methods- Rodale's magazine is a good resource
Kavanah by Rabbi Mark "...to help build up our people, our institutions and our strength so that we continue to l'takein olam b'malchut Shaddai, 'repair the world under the kingdom of heaven.' Let's get our hands deliciously "dirty" in this endeavor as we grow and sustain our beloved community."
Story: We are Shomrei Adamah, Guardians of the Earth or Keepers of the Garden of Eden. To start off we will be practical and do whatever works- but we aspire to the highest standards of earth ethics summarized by Veganic Gardening. We will carefully select the veggies and herbs to maximize output, balanced cultivation, companion planting, insect control etc. Square Foot Method optimizes density of various plants' space and creates orderly appearance. With today's high prices for quality veggies and herbs, a garden is economically desirable. Plus it is part of a healthy lifestyle, good education, and a social communal experience. All those with green (or any color) thumbs are welcome to cultivate with us.

Garden Manager
