Havdalah and a Movie Night

Saturday, March 30th

Havdalah - 7:15 pm

Movie - 7:30 pm: Nora's Will

Nora's Will is a tale of lost faith and eternal love from one of Mexico's most talented new filmmakers, writer/director Mariana Chenillo. It was named Mexico's Best Picture of the Year in 2010, taking home seven Ariel Awards. During the Passover Holidays, and under truly unique circumstances best left for surprise, Nora effects a reconciliation and reunion amongst her family. It is a mildly dark comedy with Jewish and adult themes.

Spoiler alert!  It is highly recommend that you do not go on the Internet to look up the plot! This movie in Spanish with English subtitles. Hope to see you there.

The Belle of Amherst

The Lighthouse Cafe hosts Ms. Jane Raskin performing an abridged version of the one-woman play, in which Emily Dickenson talks to the audience about her life. Her poetry is woven through her stories about her life, her family, and her secret loves. The scene is set in her home, which is perfect for our Lighthouse Cafe venue.

Ms. Raskin has performed this play at independent living facilities, community centers, schools, and even at the university in China where she taught last year!
This is an opportunity to enjoy a change of style at the Lighthouse Cafe, so we hope you'll join us.

Garden and Grounds

Beth Or's ORGANIC GARDEN continues to grow!

Let's put the 'Or' in 'Organic"

Wilfredo Candelaria, a local Master Organic Gardener kindly offers free advice and consultation to Beth Orians wanting to get their hands dirty and fill their plate with home-grown produce! Call Wilfredo (786) 234-7520.

Jeff is almost done with complete wood replacement around raised beds. Inside surfaces coated with Linseed Oil, not paint or laquer = avoid harsh chemical contamination!

Laura Sutton, local Organic Gardener/Farmer is helping us enhance the soil, suppress weeds, upgrade the garden infrastructure, mulch and fertilize the 5 immature banana trees. The remaining beds will soon be 'Fallowed' and 'Top Dressed' with hay, ready for planting next week or in September.

Laura advises:

Vegetables to plant in South Florida in March: cantaloupes, mustard, onions, okra, pole beans, radish, snap beans, summer squash, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, watermelon

Vegetables to plant in South Florida in April: lima beans, pole beans, snap beans, southern peas, summer squash

Four Raised Bed Custodians (so far):

1-Jane Weinstock 3' x 8'

2-Mark Rosenbloom 4' x 4'

3-Pat Barron 3' x 8'

4- Linda Steinberg-Lewis 3' x 8'

So, do you want to operate one of the remaining beds? There's no charge - most supplies freely available (or BYO.) Depending on the level of participation we may have a workshop or training session this season >>>

>>>OFFER: CONTACT JEFF TUCKER JMTucker007@gmail.com TO CLAIM A RAISED BED To Grow Your Own!

Do's and Don'ts:

  • Don't step on a bed (your weight compresses the soil, reducing 'friability')
  • If you don't know what to do-ASK
  • Learn as much as you can about organic-veganic methods- Rodale's magazine is a good resource

Kavanah by Rabbi Mark "...to help build up our people, our institutions and our strength so that we continue to l'takein olam b'malchut Shaddai, 'repair the world under the kingdom of heaven.' Let's get our hands deliciously "dirty" in this endeavor as we grow and sustain our beloved community."

Story: We are Shomrei Adamah, Guardians of the Earth or Keepers of the Garden of Eden. To start off we will be practical and do whatever works- but we aspire to the highest standards of earth ethics summarized by Veganic Gardening. We will carefully select the veggies and herbs to maximize output, balanced cultivation, companion planting, insect control etc. Square Foot Method optimizes density of various plants' space and creates orderly appearance. With today's high prices for quality veggies and herbs, a garden is economically desirable. Plus it is part of a healthy lifestyle, good education, and a social communal experience. All those with green (or any color) thumbs are welcome to cultivate with us.

Jeffrey M. Tucker,

Garden Manager

And Speaking of TBO Grounds

March 22-31:  Eagle Scout Adam Ashby's donated construction project along front of School Building.

Update: Eagle Scout and congregant Adam Ashby has a team working on his donated project to Beth Or- the renovation of our School Building's frontage!

Watch the construction progress today as a new patio, brightly-colored classroom doors, built-in planter boxes, resurfacing of the basketball court, moving the basketball hoop 14 feet to the west and other changes will surely transform our campus for the better.

Also a plaque honoring older brother David's Eagle Scout Enhancement-of-the-Chickee Project will be installed on the chickee's NW corner post!

Thom Elliott's One-Man Photography Show

Here's what Thom has to tell us about the show running through the month of March at Pitman Photo Supply, 13911 S. Dixie Highway.

The title of the show is "People, Places, Things, Photos For My Heart."
90% are Black and White and taken over a period of years from 1958 up to the present 2013.
Most are done with a film camera in my traditional home darkroom. Most were done just because I wanted to do, and some were paid assignments that I would have done anyway. These I call my "Silver Box Assignments" meaning I would have done them for free however I also got paid to do them: a double bonus. Most are photographs of people.

I did some in Europe, New York, Hollywood and here in Miami. I plan on being at the gallery during Pitman's business hours. Which means there till 7 pm week days and also on Saturdays and Sundays.

Thom can be contacted independently if you are interested in purchasing any of the photos. Please phone or email Beth Or, and the messages will be forwarded.

Alper JCC Children's Museum 10 Year Celebration

From now till May 5, 2013...

The nationally acclaimed children's exhibition Chagall For Children, that opened the Alper JCC's Lisa Ann Watson Children's Discovery Museum in 2003, is back to entertain and educate a whole new crop of youngsters.

The vibrant and interactive exhibit brings the colorful and dream-like world of artist Marc Chagall to life. In a series of 14 exploration stations, boys and girls use their senses to discover art principles such as color, composition, light and texture. The exhibit features music, computers and art and allows children to create with the childlike freedom of one of the world's greatest artists.

Chagall was born in Russia in 1887 and studied art in France. He learned from cubist, surrealist and fauvist painters, and developed his own imaginative style. His colorful paintings are nonrealistic and often include flowers, animals, workmen and musicians. In the exhibit, framed print images are arranged like those in an adult gallery, but each of these prints also includes an audio component and a hands-on activity.

Children create and color their own digital portraits, make crayon rubbings from a steel engraving, explore the effect of light on stained glass and rearrange a window as they would a puzzle. With the painting called 'Flowers,' children get to smell the flowers in the painting, and arrange actual flowers in a vase to recreate the bouquet like the one in the picture.

Chagall often painted faces in unusual colors. His painting "Green Violinist," is accompanied by a camera that takes a digital picture of one's face. Children are encouraged to use their imaginations, get inspired by Chagall's work, and color their portrait photo blue, green or red.

Museum visitors can learn about texture and art terms, when they compare two images - an oil painting to a bas-relief sculpture. The activity encourages kids to feel the sculpture's shape and then make crayon rubbings from the steel engraving.

Chagall for Children is designed to open one's eyes and to see the world a bit more colorfully. Although the exhibit's creators had young viewers in mind, people of all ages will enjoy the magical world of Marc Chagall.

The exhibit was created by the Kohl Children's Museum in Chicago, and runs through May 5, 2013.

Tickets: $5. The Dave and Mary Alper Jewish Community Center is located at 11155 SW 112 Avenue, Miami, 33176. For more information call 305.271.9000 x268 or visit www.alperjcc.org.
