D'var Torah - Parashat Chayyei Sarah - November 9-10, 2012
Its funny how this week's Parasha is entitled, "Sarah's Life," when in fact it focuses on her death. Abraham seeks a proper burial site, purchases it for full-fare so that the nations of the earth know for eternity that it is owned by him (and us).
But aside from bequeathing his material wealth near the end of his life, what else should Abraham be concerned giving to his descendants? What of his spiritual achievements?
After all, he argued with God over Sodom and Gomorrah - and "won." He negotiated God down to 10 (the city was still destroyed). He welcomed the strangers (angels) who were on the way to Sodom as no other in the Torah - davka, after he had just been circumcised as an adult!
And more.
What do WE want to give to our children, grandchildren, congregation, community, the world when we consider the end of our days? What values have we lived by and demonstrated all of our lives? What Ethical Will will we have written which describes our priorities - the significant beliefs, our main concerns - that we evidenced all our lives.
Hillel said, "Repent one day before your death." We don't know when that will come. Let's start considering that NOW.
Rabbi Mark
Shabbat Shalom!

~ PLEASE JOIN US FOR THESE THREE PROGRAMS ~
On the following Saturdays, 10:00 a.m. to Noon
November 10, 2012
Genesis: Innocence vs. Cynicism: Adam, Eve, an Apple and a S-s-s-nake!
December 15, 2012

Genesis: Jacob Gets the Wrong Wife!
No prior knowledge of the Bible stores or of psychodrama is required! Just bring openness and a beginner's mind!
Presented by Rabbi Mark Kram and Nancy Kirsner, Ph.D., Psychodramatist. The program is entitled "Bibliodrama: Midrash in Action," and is a form of role-playing in which the roles are taken from Biblical texts. Enacted and enlivened in the present, this form of interpretive play is often called the action version of the Midrash. The roles may be characters, objects, images or scenes from the Bible.
We have all read these Hebrew Bible stories for many years. Today we will "step into the shoes" of ech of these Biblical characters and experience their lives from the inside out.
For more information, please call the Temple at 305-235-1419, or call Dr. Nancy Kirsner at 305-274-8283.

New World Symphony and Holocaust Memorial to Co-Sponsor "Songs of the Holocaust" Concert
Even as the Nazi regime sought to take away everything else from them, the Jews of Eastern Europe found music as a way to express their humanity, to mentally escape from the realities of their situations, and to find hope and comfort. In celebration of the enduring spirit that kept so many alive during unthinkable conditions and in tribute to the millions who perished, the New World Symphony and the Holocaust Memorial of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation will present Inside the Music: Songs of the Holocaust on Tuesday, November 13, beginning at 7 p.m. at the New World Center, 500 17th Street, Miami.
Inside the Music will feature performances by the New World Symphony Fellows, and include interactive film, electronic media segments, and testimonial excerpts from Holocaust survivors. The program will reflect the importance of music in lifting spirits within the walls of the Jewish ghettoes and the barbed wire fences of the concentration camps.
The late, renowned poet Abraham Sutzkever, a Jewish partisan fighter in the Vilna Ghetto, spoke of the motivating force of music when he said, "Today I heard a beauty for which it is worthwhile to fight." Reflecting on Sutzkever's statement while planning Inside the Music, New World Symphony Fellow Anthony Parce, said, "I decided to program music that would have been such an inspiration, it would have enabled those suffering at the hands of the Nazis to carry on. I have searched for music primarily by Jewish composers written just before or in the early stages of the Holocaust, and also included two other pieces for their reflection of the culture and their outstanding beauty."
"We are proud to host this very special performance with the New World Symphony," said Andrew C. Hall, Esq., Chair of the Holocaust Memorial of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation. "The concert is one of a series of creative programs designed to promote Holocaust awareness and remembrance throughout our entire community."
Tickets for Inside the Music: Songs of the Holocaust are free of charge and must be reserved in advance. For reservations or more information, visit www.nws.edu or call 305.673.3331.
