CBC announced cuts of roughly 20% of its current complement of 7,500 employees and a new mobile-first strategy on . Shaw Media has proposed a new national news network Global News 1. Their proposal will be discussed  at the same time the CRTC will announce responses to their public consultation on the futrue of TV in Canada "Let's Talk TV.."

When Words Collide When Words Collide is a Calgary festival for readers, writers, artists and publishers of commercial and literary fiction including Science Fiction, Fantasy, Romance, Mystery, Historical, Literary, and Nonfiction. The festival runs from August 8 to 10, 2014, from Friday noon - Sunday evening at the Carriage House Inn in Calgary.

Alberta Media Awards
On May 30, the 65th annual National Newspaper Awards were handed out in Toronto. While not surprisingly, the large urban dailies and the two national dailies took the bulk of the awards, photographers at the Calgary Herald and Edmonton Journal took the bulk of the photo awards: Feature Photo (Leah Hennel), News Photo (Shaughn Butt), and Sports Photo (Amber Bracken).

Cara Fullerton Cara Fullerton, Global Calgary's anchor and reporter announced she'll be leaving the broadcast industry after 14 years to pursue a career in health and fitness. Kerry Powell, formerly with the Edmonton Journal is the new managing editor for Global Edmonton. Jeff Lewis, Calgary-based energy reporter for the Financial Post is now the same at the Globe & Mail.

Alberta Media Media Personality: Jim Zang, Source Media Group
Jim Zang Jim Zang, Associate Publisher at Calgary-based Source Media Group, considers himself a lucky man. His luck started right out of university when his sociology degree couldn't attract a job. Jim then enrolled in the Public Relations Diploma program at Mount Royal College. Since then, he reports he has had the benefit of three lucky breaks in his life.

Alberta Podcast: Mapping Alberta Artists  with Sarah Hoyle
Sarah Hoyles CKUA Sarah Hoyles is the host/producer of CKUA's ArtsBeat segment that runs on Sundays from noon to 1pm and repeats on Wednesdays from 6 to 7pm. A recent segment is on a new book by Gail Sidonie Sobat. Illustrated by Spyder Yardley Jones, it sketches the story of school violence. Jamie's Got A Gun, is an exploration into the life of a troubled Edmonton teen.

Rat Creek Press
The Rat Creek Press, published by an Edmonton-based nonprofit organization and is governed by a board of directors and managed by a strong editorial team led by publisher Karen Mykietka and editor Talea Medynski. The 16 page newspaper is crammed full of well-written and illustrated articles about local community news, events, and issues.

Alberta Magazine: Best of Routes Magazine, Special Edition
Routes Magazine Since 2008, Routes Magazine found its way into the homes and businesses thoughout the foothills of southern Alberta, up until their High Level office was wiped out by last year's devastating floods. Not to be discouraged, the team put together a special issue featuring Southern Alberta luminaries such as  media personalities Darryl Janz and Mike Holmes.

Alberta Radio Station: Banff Centre Radio
Banff Centre Radio Alberta's newest radio station, Banff Centre Radio, launched on June 23, 2014 at 101.1 FM in English & 103.3 FM in French. Hosted by locals, it explores mountain culture, life in Banff National Park, and provides information on events, roads, weather, and trail conditions for locals and visitors alike. It also showcases the many activities held at the Banff Centre.

Alberta Television Station: Shaw News Network Global News 1
In filings to the CRTC at the end of June, Calgary-based Shaw Communications, which operates Global Television, proposed to launch a "hybrid local/national" English-language national news channel. Shaw's submission included a brief outline of the plans as part of the CRTC's formal consultation on the evolution of the Canadian broadcasting system.

Alberta Book: Marion Nicholl: Science & Alchemy
The book's three contributors point out that Marion Nicholl, now considered a pioneer in abstract painting in Alberta, was classically trained and highly qualified as the first permanent female instructor at the now Alberta College of Art + Design. She taught arts & crafts courses for more than 30 years. Yet, it is her paintings now most often found in public art collections.

Alberta Film: Grey Glory a Documentary by Brandy Yanchyk
Grey Glory Grey Glory is a heartwarming and inspirational documentary produced, written and directed by Edmonton's Brandy Yanchyk. The documentary tells the stories of Canadian seniors who are pushing their bodies to the limit and redefining perceptions of aging. The doc aired in English and also Ukrainian on Rogers' OMNI TV on July 5th and 6th, 2014.

Alberta Website: City of Edmonton Virtual Museum
Created for the Edmonton Heritage Council, the highly interactive, mobile-friendly and colourful website is designed to attract, collect and share stories of the "people, places, things and moments that have shaped the city of Edmonton over time." It's also a placeholder for a city of Edmonton museum the Heritage Council hopes to realize in the future.
