Listening in Tongues: Being Bilingual as a Quaker Value

Have you seen the latest FWCC-QuakerSpeak video, "Listening in Tongues: Being Bilingual as a Quaker Value"? It is the first part of our Seeing the Tapestry project. I feel funny telling you about it, because I'm in it. Actually, it's a 5 minute interview with me about how learning to talk to other kinds of Friends is kind of like learning to speak a second language. Or rather learning to listen in another language.

There are also the three we co-produced last year, and there will be four more this year. You can find them all at
www.quakerspeak.com/friends-world-committee-for-consultation. The next one will be "Where in the World Are All the Quakers?" in September.

Seeing the Tapestry

The materials we have developed with the Quaker Religious Education Collaborative are excellent. They are designed to help you to help you as Representatives to use these videos as part of an effective religious education program. Each of the five new FWCC-QuakerSpeak videos will come with an easy to use lesson plan and suggestions for creating a whole program around the video. In addition, there is a  Resource Guide with more help for Reps who have never led a program before, plus best practices for going deeper into the themes for those who want it. I am really grateful to the Shoemaker Fund for funding this Seeing the Tapestry project, to Melinda Wenner Bradley of QREC and Beth Collea of New England YM for collecting and writing the materials, and to the Friends International Bilingual Center in Bolivia for their work on translating the subtitles for the videos and the religious education materials into Spanish. When you do use the videos, please fill out the evaluation survey
to let us know how it works for you.

We are dedicated to helping Reps to be better ambassadors for "those other kinds of Friends" right in your home community so we are hosting a webinar to help you prepare. It will start at 8 pm Eastern or 5 pm Pacific time, on Sept. 7 in English, and Sept. 13 in Spanish, on Clickmeeting.com. If you would like to participate, please email [email protected] to get the login information.

It will also be recorded and posted to the Reps page of the website so you can watch it later if you can't make the evening presentation. Consider getting the FWCC reps in your area together to watch the webinar and talk about what you will do for World Quaker Day at your home meetings or churches, at a Quarterly meeting, etc.

Thank you to the Representative Engagement Program Group for helping pull this all together. Remember, if you have a question about something FWCC, your Regional Coordinator is a good person to ask first. You can find the lists of all the nominations and all Representatives' contact information  on the Reps page in case you don't remember who to call.  To log in to the Reps page, the username is fwccsoa. The password is quaker.
World Quaker Day

World Quaker Day (OCTOBER 2, 2016) will be the perfect time to show one of these new videos! You may choose to do something else, but my expectation is that all FWCC Representatives will do something, wherever you are, on that day. Our website has posters you can print out in advance, and other helpful materials for running a successful program for adults or children. The main site, www.worldquakerday.org has even more resources including stories and photos from the last two years.

New website coming soon

Our new website is coming very soon. The English version is just about done and the Spanish is underway. Your prayers for patience, perseverance, and creativity would be most welcome. We will send you a heads up as soon as it is public. Thanks to Blythe Davenport, our Coordinator for Communication and Administration, for shepherding the project and the Communications Program Group for being a focus group to test the design and functionality along the way. It will still have the same URL: fwccamericas.org

Traveling Ministry Corps

If you or someone you know is interested in applying to join the Traveling Ministry Corps, the first application deadline is September 30, 2016. Applications and more information are available now. If your church or meeting would like to host a visiting minister, please send your request to [email protected].
2017 Section Meeting

Don't forget that the Section Meeting will be coming sooner than you think! The registration won't open until November, but save the dates for March 23-26 in Pittsburgh. Visit the webpage for more details as they emerge. And thank you to the Convocations Program Group that is already busy.

2016 Statistical Forms

We will be sending out the statistical forms to every yearly meeting by the end of August. Please check with your yearly meeting clerk and or staff to be sure they send us the names of the new Representatives this year, so we can be sure to send them the next one of these letters. Watch for the Nominating Committee Interest Survey coming soon to your inbox!

And last, the statistical forms will be even more important this year because the World Office will be preparing a new statistical map of Friends Around the World in 2017 - the membership data on the statistical form is what we use for that. So please double check that your yearly meeting has sent your current information. If you have any questions, please ask Hye Sung Gehring, our Coordinator for Events and Engagement.
