Riccardo d'Aquino, architect and professor at the University of Arkansas Rome Center, will lecture on "Architecture and Such Things: Elemental Observations on Several Works." The topic of the lecture will be of particular interest to LSU School of Architecture students and faculty, architects, and community members interested in learning more about architecture from an international perspective.

Michael Blier is a registered landscape architect and founding principal of the critically recognized design group, Landworks Studio, Inc., located in Boston, Massachusetts. Blier has taught at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, Rhode Island School of Design, and Penn State University. His recent work is largely urban and site-specific in nature and seeks to exploit and mine the inherent complexities that exist between ecologically challenged sites, ecological and cultural sustainability, material tectonics, and program as a mechanism for achieving highly performative and experientially and visually compelling solutions to a broad set of conditions that confront the re-urbanization of disturbed land.

Professor Marc Fumaroli is one of the preeminent intellectual historians of our time. A member of the Académie française and the Collège de France, he has taught at the Sorbonne in Paris and the University of Chicago. At the Collège de France he holds the Chair in Rhetoric and Society in Europe (16th to 17th century). He comes to us through partnerships with the LSU College and Art + Design, the Comparative Literature Program, the Departments of French and History, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the French Consulate in New Orleans. Jori Erdman, the director of the LSU School of Architecture, is hosting an LSU alumni reception during the Texas Society of Architects 74th Annual Design Expo, on November 7, from 6 - 8 p.m. The reception will be held in the Sundance Room at the Omni Fort Worth hotel at 1300 Houston Street. School of Architecture alumni may expect to receive an e-invitation to the reception soon.

Art Students Use Supercomputer and New Motion Capture Studio
|

Assistant Professor of Digital Art Derick Ostrenko has been a pioneer in encouraging art students to utilize LSU High Performance Computing (HPC) facilities. In addition to serving the digital art students, LSU's supercomputing capabilities can benefit local businesses, as well. Ostrenko has also worked to set up a motion capture studio in the Art Building, complete with black jumpsuit and markers. Read more

Jeffrey Carney, associate professor of architecture and director of the Coastal Sustainability Studio, and Kristi Cheramie, Susan Turner Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture at the Robert Reich School of Landscape Architecture, are co-chairs of Environmental Design Research Association's 45th annual conference. School of Architecture faculty Ursula Emory McClure and Catherine Bonier will chair tracks at the conference, as well. EDRA45: Building with Change will be held in the heart of the French Quarter of New Orleans, Louisiana, May 28-31, 2014. Read more

Interior design department professionals in residence Tracy Burns and Matthew Edmonds are the principals of Commercial Design Interiors, a Louisiana-registered interior design firm based in Baton Rouge, which has recently won a bevy of national and regional awards. The firm was honored with four awards by the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) Delta Regional Chapter and received recognition at the National ASI Innovations show. And the firm's work has been published in three design books over the past 16 months. Read more

One Eye Shut, the October exhibition at Hammond Regional Arts Center, features the current photographic work of six MFA candidates at LSU: Andrea L. Barbier, Kimberly Jones, Sarah Kolac, Ian C. Minich, Jim Osborne, and Randi M. Willett. The exhibition was curated by LSU School of Art photography professor Thomas Neff. The exhibition will run October 4-26, 2013. Two recent graduates of the Master of Architecture program at LSU placed in the ACSA 2012-13 International Student Ideas Competition, "Preservation as Provocation: Rethinking Castle Pinckney for the 21st Century." Marcia Gibson placed third in the competition for her proposal, "The Embattlement: Re-Designing the Future of Castle Pinckney," and Kerry Kenney received an honorable mention for his proposal, "The ArtifACT of Preserving." The project is sponsored by the LSU Department of Interior Design, the Baton Rouge chapter of the International Facility Management Association (IFMA-BR), the Mid City Redevelopment Alliance (MCRA), Knoll, Inc., and local business Letterman's. Congratulations to Jordan Boan (BLA, '13), who was recently notified by the Tennessee Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) that he will be receiving a Professional Award for his capstone project in Franklin, Tennessee. Boan is currently a Master of Landscape Architecture candidate at Harvard University Graduate School of Design.
Kurt Culbertson, Bachelor of Landscape Architecture, Class of '76
Design Workshop (designworkshop.com) out of Austin, Texas was chosen as the Master Planning team for Lafayette Central Park, Inc. The Design Workshop team is made up of both local and national firms and employs many LSU Robert Reich School of Landscape Architecture alumni. Congratulations to Design Workshop's principal-in-charge, Kurt Culbertson, who hails from Louisiana and maintains close connections to his alma mater, LSU, and his roots.
