SPAAR Members Fight for Home Ownership Rights

Realtors® and leaders from SPAAR took to Capitol Hill last week to meet with their elected officials as part of the 2016 REALTOR® Legislative Meetings & Trade Expo in Washington, D.C.

The Saint Paul Area Association of REALTORS® took an active role in the meetings, sitting down with members of Minnesota's Congressional delegation, to discuss real estate issues in the community, as well as challenges and opportunities for homeownership.

ISSUE ALERT! Metropolitan Council $2.7M Annual Fee Forces West St. Paul to Consider POS Ordinance

The City of West St. Paul is proposing amendments to their current Infill & Infiltration ordinance (a.k.a. “I&I”).  I&I is a process by which either via outdated designs or system failure, excessive clean water (i.e. rain water) is entering the sanitary sewer pipes. Estimated age of the “sewer laterals,” that piece of pipe between the residence and the street, is between 50-60 years old and failing. Remember “sewer laterals” reside on private property and therefore are ultimately the responsibility of the property owner. Failing occurs when sump pumps are directed straight into sanitary sewer pipes or the structural integrity of the lateral itself has been compromised with breaks or cracks due to age of the infrastructure, root intrusion, or otherwise. NAR Board Adopts Policy on Student Loan Debt

The National Association of REALTORS®’ Board of Directors at its May 14 meeting in Washington adopted a policy that seeks to ease student debt burdens that threaten to make it harder for people to become home buyers. In response to growing concerns over the impact of student debt on the ability to buy a home, the board adopted a policy that seeks to allow student borrowers to refinance their loans and streamline income-based repayment programs. Additionally, NAR supports proposals that promote student loan simplification, clarity, and education. And NAR will take steps to ensure that mortgage underwriting guidelines related to student loan debt are standardized and do not impair home ownership.
