Rolling Thunder
Well, it's not exactly as much fun as being on a Harley during a poker run, but it's one of the more enjoyable farm tasks in hot summer weather. As the season progresses and some areas are harvested we either put in new row crops for fall harvest, or as shown above we seed sections back into cover crops. We don't have a proper grain drill implement , but we have had good success planting with a broadcast seeder, then rolling the seed in to achieve good soil contact. The cover crop being planted above is buckwheat. Not only will it help hold the soil from wind and rain erosion it will put some nutrients back in when it's tilled under and, as an added bonus, buckwheat flowers are a favorite of Al's bees. The beehives are seen on the left side of the picture. Our West Blueberry Field, now covered with bird exclusion nets, is in the background. Our potato rows are just behind the ATV.

Master Gardener Mary DiTullio always shares great links. This one is no exception
At a TEDx event, 11-year-old Birke Baehr presents his take on a major source of our food - far-away and less-than-picturesque industrial farms. Keeping farms out of sight promotes a rosy, unreal picture of big-box agriculture, he argues, as he outlines the case to green and localize food production.
