Playing Defense
In the photo above, granddaughter Autumn deploys our bird exclusion nets along the tops of the blueberry rows. Our friends at the Audubon Society dislike the idiom, "killing two birds with one stone," but that is exactly what we are doing. The nets are stored in and on top of our walk in cooler. We need to be ahead of the hungry birds looking for berries and we need to do our spring cleaning and sanitizing of the cooler for our CSA produce. Both tasks were completed this week.

 2016 CSA
Reinforcements
The final wave of spring lettuce was planted this week. The Bib Lettuce pictured above is more heat tolerant than some other varieties, but all lettuce prefers cooler temperatures than we normally experience in mid summer. If the summer turns out to be on the cloudy and cool side, we will grow this batch out to mature heads. If hot temperatures prevail, especially warmer than normal nights, we will harvest it early as loose leaf and bag it accordingly. Either way, the lettuce in this week's CSA distribution should only be the start of a steady base for summer salads.
In addition to Red Butterhead Lettuce in this week's shares there will be the normally expected early season greens including, Green Kale, Collard Greens, and Rainbow Chard. Also, thanks to our partners at Clarion River Organics we are able to include the season's first Zucchini!

New research confirms continued, unabated, large-scale amphibian declines
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Even though amphibian populations are declining sharply worldwide, there is no smoking gun to indicate a cause and thus no simple solution to halting or reversing these declines.
