Slow, But Sure
The blueberry bloom is underway. The first blossoms opened up one week behind seasonal averages. This is normally a good thing as it reduces the risk of a late frost damaging the flowers at their most vulnerable stage.

New Home
This week bee keeper Al Machinski began moving the farm's hives into our new electric fence enclosure. The bees were originally located about 100 yards to the South. While we are working to keep out the deer, Al is worried about a repeat honey loving bear appearance. The blueberries are not the only crop that need adequate pollination. Many of the blossoming vegetables that we are growing for the CSA will benefit from the bee's close proximity.
The 2016 USDA Certified Organic weekly shares will be approximately one half bushel in size. This volume is roughly equal to a full paper grocery bag. Non corporate distributions will be on Saturdays.

New this year!
Announcing a corporate CSA program.
We will begin partnering with area companies and institutions that have employees wishing to receive CSA distributions. Deliveries will be made directly to the partner's location on either Thursday, or Friday afternoons near the end of the business day. We believe this will allow us to more efficiently spread out our harvest and distributions while providing convenience and additional opportunities for area residents to receive fresh, local, organic produce. Please contact the farm for additional details.
In addition to picking up the shares here at the farm we anticipate using the same drop sites as last season. Competitive Gear Bicycle Shop in Millcreek, and the Whole Foods Co-Op in Erie.
Home delivery is available in the city of Erie and the following townships; Fairview, Franklin, Girard, Greene, Harborcreek, McKean, Millcreek, Summit, Washington, and Waterford
Sign up forms are available at the farm, or you can sign up electronically on the CSA page at www.hunterfarmsorganic.com Previous members with no change in contact information can simply let us know you wish to sign up. We can complete the form for you using the information in our records.
We are very much looking forward to serving our 2016 CSA members! Please feel free to contact us with any questions.

Watch Your Language
Words rise up to describe the work of farmers caring for the land and livestock. Corporations commonly co-opt many of these words if they don't have legal definitions: green, natural, farm fresh. Some food packaging claims do have legal definitions, including organic, free-range, grass-fed, cage-free, pasture-raised, non-GMO, Certified Humane, Animal Welfare Approved, and American Humane Certified. Consumers can ensure they get what they pay for by knowing what these labels mean. You might be surprised that free-range, USDA grass-fed, and cage-free may not mean what you think. Chicken labeled Certified Humane or American Humane Certified may have never been outside. Cornucopia's news and scorecards can help you decide which brands to support.
